'ghost' files copied to a memory card

WHen you copy files to a memory stick (or to any non-mac volume it seems) you end up with the files you wanted plus a set of small files with similar names to the originals.

This is just an inconvenience usually, but having just bought a digital photo frame it's now a problem becuase the photo frame tries (and fails) to display the ghost files as well as the JPGs themselves.

So - how to copy files off a mac without their ghostly counterparts making it across to the memory stick?

Re: 'ghost' files copied to a memory vard

I have the same problem when i copy mp3 onto my sony ericcson phone. It is fine if i bluetooth them from the mac but not if i use the usb cable. Also they don't appear when you browse with the finder either.

I don't know a work around though I'm afraid.

Re: 'ghost' files copied to a memory vard

Kinda spooky, I read a thread on MacRumors only today where someone mentioned this... Try this Apple KB article Mac OS X 10.4: How to prevent .DS_Store file creation over network connections. You can turn off the .DS_Store files that are created. Not sure if this is the same file you see, but worth a shot.

Re: 'ghost' files copied to a memory vard

the files you are seeing are the resource forks, data forks being the ones you want to copy. After a quick google you could try this - Blueharvest which will do what you want but costs 10USD after the 30 day trial expires. There may be other (free) ways to avoid them copying but as I never really use any other filesystems I haven't looked into it.

hope this helps
Dan
