Thumbs down NTl/Virgin speed upgrade

In theory I now have a 20mb service, in reality over 3 days the download speed varied from 5mb to 15mb and the test was done at the same time each day. The upload speed was diabolical only 0.7mb.
If you want to see what you are actually getting try this link:http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

Not even sure if it worth talking to Virgin about it, but it does make you think what would happen if you downgraded your service

Re: NTl/Virgin speed upgrade

I had this problem some months ago with my 10Mb connection, after speaking to VM and the first line support trying to fobb me off with silly excuses ie it was my PC i kicked upa fuss and one of their broadband senior support engineers called me, we ran some download checks and low and behold i was not getting anywhere close to my speed

A couple of days later i got a email saying that they had put me on the top UBR for my area (Wigan) and guess what...........problem solved but they would still not tell me what was causing it, they had just "upgraded me on the UBR as a matter of course" mmmmmmmmmm.

Hope this helps

Which is exactly what they say it will be. From the Virgin website...

So what will the new speeds be?
We're increasing our download speeds to a supersonic 20Mb! We're also increasing our upload speed to 768Kb

Re: NTl/Virgin speed upgrade

Well its arrived in Gateshead. Most ive had so far has been 1487kb/s on newsgroups but ive gone up from 40 to 70kb/s on torrent uploads.

As far as testing at speed sites I'm now getting 8mb/s when i used to get 4mb/s. Telewest never reported well at speedsites so no surprises there.

Got problems with disc overload when downloading via torrents and newsgroups at the same time to the same HD with the superspeed. I'll put them on different drives to see if it solves it. Hopefully as both SATAII it could help.

I was quite happy with my guarranteed 10mb/s now ive got to arse about moving folders, scheduling downloads, etc. all because my superspeed isnt actually sustainable so throttling is introduced. If only I could get a guarranteed 8-10mb/s with no throttling.

Re: NTl/Virgin speed upgrade

the 20mbit service is a joke.

at least when it was ntl i could get a constant 10mbit downstream when i wanted. Im not paying 37 quid for a throttled service when it suits them.

Re: NTl/Virgin speed upgrade

I'm off booked my BT line tonight. Going to take a gamble and see how bebroadband workout as there's no contract.

VirginCS were the straw that broke the camels back in the end. Asked 3 times for a manager to ring me and still no call. They dont answer the phone, wont reply in writing to any letters, and wont ring you back despite 3 calls. Not good enough. Shame as been with Telewest for many years, good one Richard you really are a dick to have messed this one up.

Re: NTl/Virgin speed upgrade

Does anyone know if the numbers they quote on the NTL?Virgin site are in bits, or bytes?

Reason I ask is because I am currently on 8 MB BT Broadband, and to be honest, it has been flawless so far, I used windows explorer to download xp sp2 from the microsoft site, I averaged about 450 - 500 kbps. This was around 5.30pm, obviously speeds are a bit better during off peak hours due to network usuage.

I tend not to use speedtets much.

Bear in mind, IE shows rate in bytes, not bits. I was confused at this first, as I thought 8mb meant 8 megabytes, when it turns out to be 8 megabits. When I originally signed up to BTBB, their site said the max I would get would be 6mb, due to distance from nearest exchange.

6000/8 (8 bits in a byte) = Max of 750 Kilobytes p/s

So, it did sound better once the calculations were done, but, still not getting what I should be, even during late off peak hours, I suppose this would be down to the actual quality of line etc...

Is this the same for NTL/Virign users?

Most ISPs regardless of ADSL or Cable quote the line rate in bits per second (bps) Although many of them use the wrong units on their websites & marketing literature.

Browsers and programs tend to show transfer speeds in Bytes per second (Bps)

Your assumption of dividing by 8 is not quite right in relation to ADSL broadband speeds as it does not take into account ATM overheads.
Dividing by 10 gives a better picture, not scientific by any means but its usually there or thereabouts.
