Denon DF102 new owner needs help

I have just ordered the DF102Dab mini system and am wondering whether to invest in a subwoofer. My last system gave up the ghost after 24 years so I a novice at knowing how to get a good sound. Do I need to buy a particular type of sub or are most compatible? I am looking to spend between £100-£150 and don't really know if I need one or not? I am also connecting my TV through the system if this makes a difference.Would really appreciate your thoughts on this.

Have you hooked up the Denon yet and tried it?

If not, give it a listen and see whether you actually need a sub. I suspect it will sound just fine and probably be a big improvement on what you had before?

If you still think you need a sub after a few weeks listening, budget more than £150 for something half-decent.

Hooking it up is the tricky bit for us novices. It is due for delivery today and yes you are right I am sure it will be a big improvement on my Aiwa system.I am hoping it will come with all the leads I need or that will be my next question! Thanks for your help, it is good to know that people will help with basic questions on a site where there is so much knowledge.

Re: Denon DF102 new owner needs help

You're welcome.

I'm sure all the kit you'll need will be in the box and you'll be enjoying it in no time. Remember to keep the volume lower than normal for the first 24 (ish) hours play so that the speakers can run-in safely. The setup will also sound better the longer you play it.

Later you can look to replacing the free speaker cable in the box with something a bit more substantial - this may improve the sound again.

Don't forget to think about positioning of the speakers too - place them on sturdy stands not too close to walls/corners for them to really shine.

Finally got the Denon today after Parcelforce sent it in and out of their depot for three days! Managed to hook everything up and wow what a sound. I can't believe what I've been missing all these years. I wasn't sure whether to leave the base/treble at zero or have the SR Direct on or SDN on or off, but it is a vast improvement on my old sound system. Any thoughts on the settings would be appreciated. I am one very happy lady!

I have had the DF102 DAB now for about 2 months, like you I am really impressed with the sound. What speakers are you using? also did you invest in the Denon ASD Ipod dock? I think you will agree that you do not require a sub with this excellent system.

Re: Denon DF102 new owner needs help

I ordered the speakers that were advertised with HIFIX.They are european and you can view them on the Hifix web site
Hifix SCF102
DENON SCF102 SPEAKERS http://www.hifix.co.uk
I am really pleased with the sound and haven't watched tele all weekend! I have found that they are better left on 0 settings and with the foam plugs half way in. You are right I don't need a woofer but am thinking about getting the ipod docking station. Can I plug in my ipod witjout a docking station? I have one lead left over which is a short lead with jack plugs on it and I don't really know what it is for.

Hi, yes you can connect your ipod without the docking station via the connection on the front of the receiver. The advantage of the docking station is that the track information from your ipod is shown on the display of the receivier and you can also use your remote to control your ipod. It also charges your ipod. If you read any hi-fi mags they all give 5 stars to the Denon ASD docking station. The other advantage of this system is it really does look the part dont you agree?

Yes , I am really impressed with the quality and design of the units. I think I will try and source a docking station this week. The Hifix website seems to be quite a competative site and the order was despatched quickly.Parcelforce are a dead loss though in our area, I have had three delivery problems with them in the last couple of months.I have run the television through the speakers as well and the surround sound is good.I have found the DAB radio brilliant and have not even set the ariel yet.

Re: Denon DF102 new owner needs help

Hi, I have just purchased this system with mordant short 902i speakers which I assumed would sound better than the standard denon speakers bundled with the basic package. They were on offer at petertyson.

I am a noob when it comes to hi fi and I've previously had a sony micro hi fi with buzzing speakers and a horrible muffled sound to them so I really hope this denon system will sound sooo much better!

What's this about running in my speakers on low volume for 24 hours? I never knew you had to be so careful with new equipment...I was going to crank it up to full volume to test it out...should I not do that?

Also, I've not bought any speaker cable...does top quality cable really make a difference? I don't want to spend much more on this setup but if top quality cables are noticably better sounding (to non audiophile ears) then I will buy them. Any recommendations? I don't really want to spend any more than £20-30.

Thanks very much for any help!
