Marching for Britain
What could be more British than a Silver Band? This is a photo of Loxley Silver Band marching on their way to open the Grenoside Gala in Sheffield on Saturday - and holding up the traffic too! Click on image to go to my flickr site and see a larger version.
PP work done:
- HDR from RAW using Photomatix Pro
- cropped
- noise removed using Noiseware Community Edition
- USM
- border added
EXIF:
Camera - Canon 350D
shutter speed - 1/125s
aperture - f/9
focal length - 31mm
ISO - 400
Original to be emailed to Zone (Photomatix seems to have stripped the EXIF)

A band with Union Flags?
Still, nice photograph. You seemed to have focused on the pub behind, rather than the the musicians. Were you thinking about a swift pint afterwards?

Re: Marching for Britain
Subtle HDR Simon so i'm wondering why you needed it The colurs could do with a boost for me, they look slightly washed out. On theme though and a decent shot

Re: Marching for Britain
Does look a bit washed out to me too, but has a definite british feel to the shot

Re: Marching for Britain
Nice composition Simon,I think the colour sat is about right, but maybe a contrast hike would pull it all together.
very british

It wasn't intentional but now you come to mention it perhaps I was subconsciously thinking of beer...

Yes, it is a subtle HDR - I would have thought you'd have approved of that! I wanted to try to get some detail back from the sky (but it didn't work so I cropped the sky away). Plus the HDR brought out more detail from the band members clothes.

Yeah, the colours are a bit muted but it was an overcast, dull day so I am representing what I saw.

Yeah, perhaps a bit more contrast would improve things.

Re: Marching for Britain
Nice take Simon and i like the idea that makes it right on theme
I generally dont like to criticise others photos on here if i can help as i dont think i am qualified to do so, so i will only offer my humble opinion.
Something seems to be missing as regards impact, it seems a bit `laid back`if you know what i mean, possibly lacking contrast, but as you have said it does reflect the conditions on the day.
(Hope you and the good folk in Sheffield have not suffered too greatly from the floods)

The same reason I used it, not something I had thought about when I posted the comment

Everyone is entitled to criticise provided it's constructive. I agree with you (and the others) about the lack of impact. I think increasing the contrast would have helped here.
The floods didn't affect me too much thanks. My cellar is a little flooded but this has happened before and I don't store anything of value down there so I'm not concerned. It also took me 6 hours to drive the 5 miles home from work on Monday!
