Screen to go with my Optoma HD70
Morning all.
So-I've just purchased my 1st projector.
I'm now looking for some advice on a screen, below are a few pictures of the room that I'm going to install it in:
(NB-this isn't my house/living room, it's a house we're buying.
Looking towards where the screen will be
Looking away from the screen
The other question I have is where to mount the projector-do I mount it at the rear of the room, or on the ceiling kind of behind where the light currently is (that will be coming down by the way!)?
All advice welcome.

Re: Screen to go with my Optoma HD70
I'm a noob projector owner myself, or soon to be, but from what I've read up on here it would be handy if you could give a few dimensions of the room, screen size required, whether there will be any ambient light etc.
Guessing from the picture though I would think the pj will have to be mounted at the rear of the room if you want a picture size considerably larger than that of the plasma currently on the wall there, I don't think there is enough distance from the wall from the other position you mentioned.
A good place to look for pj placement etc is

Re: Screen to go with my Optoma HD70
How much can you darken the room during daylight? Might seem like an odd question but you may need a higher gain screen than normal if you struggle to block out most light. Higher gain screens mean narrower viewing angles though.

Not an awful amount as the living area is next to the dining room, which is next to the patio doors, which are next to the garden!

Re: Screen to go with my Optoma HD70
This might seem like a silly suggestion, but have you ever thought of getting a screen that will work with rear projection?
You could place the pj on the cupboard under the plasma and have the screen coming down from the beam. You may not get the biggest picture with the pj that close to the screen but that would make it brighter and as the screen would be so much closer to your sitting position it would still seem very large
I have a room with a similar layout if a bit bigger and tried it with just a strectched cotton sheet and it worked pretty well but didn't give me a screen big enough for my layout. I would love to have been able to try it with a proper screen designed for rear projection.

Re: Screen to go with my Optoma HD70
I'm with you Jonstone. Rear projection is definitely the way to go if you've got the space. You can get much better picture quality and brightness. I supply electric rear projection screens that can come off the back of the beam. If the throw distance is not too great then why not use a front surface mirror? I've done a couple of installs just like that, hundreds without a mirror. Great picture quality, nice neat installation. Beats the hell out of front projection anyday!

Couldn't find any on your website, what kind of sizes do they come in and how do they compare pricewise to front projection screens?

Re: Screen to go with my Optoma HD70
That's because they're not listed. We supply all sorts of screens to all sorts of installers and an electric rear projection screen is normally used in POS applications - you know - shop windows! Imagine the scene, you're attracted to an image that's projected onto a rear pro screen. You approach the window and then it raises to leave you looking at the goods in the shop window. Sort of people magnet! There used to be a product called Privalite that was used for a similar reason only it wasn't flexible. It was LCD that could be switched on and off. One second it would be opaque and a rear projection screen the next it would be clear and you would be looking at the goods in the window!!! If you want to see what that looks like then Sharp used it in a promo video for their early LCD projectors. There's a hotel in London that used to use it in windows for privacy. Blinds are cheaper...
However, I digress. We supply rear projection screens and they're not that expensive. If you have a requirement then PM me and I'll work out a price.

Not yet.
I just don't know what to do, so I think I'm just going to paint the wall for the interim (off on hols next Friday so I don't need to rush anything), and then make a decision after that.
I also spotted this yesterday: http://www.vogels.com/detail.asp?ISSAID=628
