Question Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

I have just spent some of my hard earned cash on a Sony DAV-DZ230 system. Previously I had been running a Sky+ box and Philips DVD recorder through a cheapo Durabrand (Asda own brand) surround speaker system. (Audio) Connections into the Durabrand subwoofer were simple 2-phono to 2-phono leads.

The problem I have with my new Sony system, and I honestly cannot believe this problem, is that it does not have a single audio input, other than a 3.5mm input on the front. I didn't even bother looking to see if it did before buying, as I (perhaps stupidly) assumed it would have at least 1 set of phono inputs.

Now, before I take the system back to the store and have to spend even more on a system with the necessary connections, can someone confirm to me what would be the end result of me connecting the phono outputs of the Sky+ box to the 3.5mm input of the Sony via a simple 2-phono to 3.5mm lead? Am I likely to get more than just 2-channel sound out? (Can't test myself, coz haven't got such a lead yet).

Thanks in advance!

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

You can'y use the 3.5mm socket - this is for auto calibration.

The system is designed so you can hear audio from any source displayed on your screen. Select "TV" using the function button, the sound from whatever is displayed on tv screen is sent down the scart cable in to your DAV system.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

I'm now even more confused...

According to the user manual, the 3.5mm input is 'AUDIO IN / A.CAL MIC', hence why I thought of using this as an input from the Sky+ box

I have tried setting it up as described in the user guide, but cannot work out how your instructions above would work. Surely the scart socket on the DAV is an output, not an input?

The rear panel connectors are as follows :-

1. Speaker Jacks - obviously irrelevant
2. DMPORT - again irrelevant
3. AM Terminal - again irrelevant
4. Coaxial FM Terminal - again irrelevant
5. Scart Socket - marked as ' Output (To TV) jack'
6. HDMI OUT jack - again only an output

Then there is the front panel 3.5mm socket, as above.

SO...back to the question in hand...how am I supposed to get sound from the Sky+ box to the DAV without resorting to the 3.5mm socket???

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Connect the Dav to the tv with scart (the sky box needs to be connected to the tv via separate scart lead).

Select "TV", and whatever your watching on the tv (bbc/itv/sky/etc) will be output from the DAV. The scart socket on the DAV is an input/output, which is how this works.

Rather than trying to get your head round this, just go and try it.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

OK. I took a leap of faith and connected it as per your instructions. I am now experiencing TV sound through the DAV. However, it is still not quite right...

Sound changes depending on analogue TV programme selected, as you would expect.

Sound remains on current analogue TV programme even when an alternative input is selected - i.e. Sky+ connected to TV by scart (Ext1) is not heard through DAV. What is heard is current analogue TV programme.

SO...just to confirm...Sky+ connected to TV by Scart. DAV connected to TV by both HDMI and Scart.

We're nearly there!!! :D

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Well at least you're half way there!

Is it a Sony tv?

I can't comment on other makes (but they may be similar), but if it is a Sony, there are some adjustments to make on the tv menu.

Scart socket 2 on the tv is usually the one outputting audio, so this is the one the needs connecting to the DAV. In the tv menu you can choose what is output, ie Analog / Digital / AV1 / Current. You need to change this to 'current' (or whatever it's called), so that anything displayed on the tv's screen has it's audio sent to the scart socket.

We must have both been typing at the same time.

Glad it's sorted.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Assuming XBox is connected by scart to TV(?) it should just be a case of connecting DAV to TV by scart, and setting the output of that scart to AUTO so whatever is shown on TV is played through DAV.

What TV do you have?

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

I have this sony dav230 and a television crt Philips 9416 (3 scarts, 1 s-video). I am waiting for the Epson tw700 in one week.
In the wall (for the connection with the pj) there are cables dvi, rca and s-video.
How do I make the connections in order to see tv channels from pj while hearing from sony?

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what options are available on your Samsung. On my Sony, there is an option to set the output of Scart 2 (the scart socket my DAV is connected to) to AUTO (i.e. whatever is showing onscreen). It might be similar on your set, but I'm not sure.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Sorry for jumping in on this, but this thread relates to a problem I've had. I have a Sony PS3, a Sony KDL40W200 and a Sony DAV-DZ230 system. When I got the DZ230, I didn't check to make sure there was a digital audio connection so I could have sound coming through from the PS3 through the DZ230. I've read through the tread, but can't get sound coming through at all.I'd appreciate any help/advise?
Thanks

Unfortunately, you won't get proper DD 5.1 as there are no digital inputs - FULLSTOP. You won't even get stereo/DPL II, as I'm assuming you're using a hdmi cable. Sound won't be output from the tv's scart socket because you're inputing a digital signal via hdmi.

The only solution to get sound is connecting via scart instead of hdmi.
