Monitor Audio ?
My system is currently Dussun V8i amp , Esound E5 cd , TDL studio .75m speakers.
I want to upgrade my speakers to something a bit newer. I have been informed off the local dealers that either Quad 22L or Monitor Audio GS-20 would be a good bet (or GS-60 now sevenoaks have 25% off)
what are you takes on these speakers ?
I want to keep basically a similar sound to what I have already but added imaging and more clear mids.
any other recomendations - I want to spend about £1000 but might stretch to £1500 if I really like them.

Re: Monitor Audio ?
Found you on here Marc.
Just a quick question - is your Dussun V8i 220v? Any problems with this? Don't want to lay out on the V6i for it to go up in smoke!
Regards, Dan.

Re: Monitor Audio ?
yes its a 220v version.
No problems with it at all apart from it is very sensitive to vibration so make sure your rack fits it as its rather large.
after it has ran in it sounds totally amazing i must add - good luck
[edit] ha ha , i didnt click on to who it was then.
when are you sending off for it ? cattylink took about 9 days total getting my cd to me but 5 of them were "testing period" so its pretty quick

Re: Monitor Audio ?
I can say from what i have auditioned that the GS10 standmounts and GS20 floorstander sound incredible. but the any Monitor Audio products and you get way over the odds for the price. and the finishes (my favourite is piano black) look phenominal

the gold range is a revelation over the silver range......the difference from my Silver S range to Gold GR range was bigger than the Silver RS to Gold GS range in current production, but there is still quite a gap in quality.....although part of that will come down to the source and amp used......i ended up plumping for a £1,500 amp to get the absolute best out of my GR10's which were only an £800 model.......however that same amp would pretty much get the best out of the 20's as well....but the 60's love to be fed very high quality amping, you can hook them up to £4k amps and still hear improvements...lol.....however, they can be hooked up to cheaper amps providing they can give out reasonable amount of power and do so continuously when being driven loud.....

Very interesting amplifier....I'd be fascinated to know your opinions once you've upgraded your speakers.
I think that the majority of problems with 220V rated chinese amps Vs 240V UK spec models is in the tube amp sector, where some of the higher powered SET amps using 845 tubes or similar, requiring a very high anode voltage, were running into serious problems with the Ht rectifier giving up the ghost.
For S/s amps this is far less likely to be a problem, and obviously you havent had any!

Re: Monitor Audio ?
alexs2.
What made me look at chinese hifi was the Cayin A88T valve amp and I too had heard this regarding the valves overdriving so I purchased solid state.
Since then I have spoken to quite a few people regarding the valves and uk voltage issue over email and none have had troubles with the valves/amps running in the UK. I guess it is amp specific and not a general thing about all imported hifi. The Cayin amps, ive been told seem to run a bit warmer but thats about all.

It was mainly the HT end of amps using transmitter triodes as their output tubes...these run HT voltages of over 1kV in some cases and the poor old rectifier was peaking well over 1200V in some and was not able to cope.
There were also a few isolated mains transformer failures IIRC.
Also,I've found since buying a mains filter that the mains where we are certainly rarely gets above 230V.

Re: Monitor Audio ?
The big Sevenoaks discounts have got me in a pickle too. 25% off brings the GS60s down to £1500 which is something of a bargain. I am just waiting for the paint to dry in my lounge and I'll be taking a careful look at whether they are physically too big for the room. For what it is worth the GS60s blew the GS20s out of the water for me. Whether this will be true in a smaller room I will soon find out.
