I'm looking for some info on Tiscali's new HD set top box. Whether it's still coming out in July, the connection and display options, etc -The only thing that I know is that it has a 160gb hard disk and getting info from Tiscali tends to be very difficult.

thanks for any info

supposidly. I rang up today to cancel and when I told them that i was going to switch to Sky for the HD, the guys said that the boxes will be out in July (he said he wasn't sure if it will be free, but if not it will be relatively cheap) and that the HD service will roll out by the end of the summer. will have to wait and see.

It sounds like you spoke to the "clueless department". I doubt we'll see it this time of the summer now.

Actually, it's THIS box:

I know, because I have it ;) Since the GUI update this week, the HDMI socket has now started working, and everything outputs in 1080i. No HD channels that I can see, but regular TV is all upscaled and looks very swish.

Where did you get it? From Tiscali? How much was it? How big is the hard disk? Is it for IP us only or does it also have a regular aerial input socket?

Cheers

It looks pretty amazing but I'm not sure I'd bother unless I could pick up actual HD channels with it. I keep hearing LCD TVs upscale anyway, how well in comparison I've no idea.

Yeah there's a handful of trialists out there with it, it may just be the trial box with similar features to the final release. There's no hard-disk/PVR features that I can see. Network cable input only.

The HDMI socket didn't work until this recent update. The upscaling of the box is a marked improvement over my TVs scalers, I couldn't go back to scart now.

Thanks.

Interesting about the upscaling.

Did you get it from Tiscali? If so how? Thanks again.

They just rang me up one night and told me I'd been chosen to take part in a trial. I doubt you can request it but it's worth a try I guess.

Luck B... ;)

Did they say how long the trial was to go on for? Or have they told you since when they plan to add HD stuff? That is indeed very sweet.

Nah, haven't heard a word from them except a questionaire I had to answer about a week in.

Hi onkeh,
does the box have a component connection at the back or does it only have a HDMI connection?

cheers

It's unlikely the Component would be able to upscale anyway.

I phoned Tiscali today and they said the PVR box would be out at the end of the year!
(and somehow there's no TV service in my area!)

Liam.

No component I'm afraid.

Just called them, and apparently Glasgow and Edinburgh went live last week, but none in Ayr yet. :(

And absolutely no info at all on an HD service.

Gutted! :(

Unless I can get a converter that can turn a HDMI output into a component one it looks like I'm going to switch to an LCD! At least I'll have an excuse to get a 37" or 40" tv - Now I've got to get one for around £600 but at least I've got few months to save up the cash.

Thanks for the info.

Like I said, this is the TRIAL box, it just has features similar to that of the box that will eventually be released. Nothing's set in stone yet mate!
