I currently use an ageing Umax 3450 flatbed scanner with cheapo transparency adapter, which has never produced clean or satisfactory negative scans.

I'm looking at getting a 35mm Film scanner and have come across the Primefilm 1800AFL from jessops for £199. Does anyone have any experience of this, or use something similar?

I Would be interested in maximum print sizes that you can get away with and the level of detail in the scans.

Thanks

I have a Nikon which is great for trannies and negs but was twice the price of the one you've seen. I guess it just depends what you requirements are. The very clever dust removal for trannies was important to me so I paid the extra. I think the level of detail is really quite amazing and I would blow the results up to the same level as photographic prints. I think using film to shoot still gives me more latitude than electronic (at least the ones in my price range) that said I do use a Nikon 995 for some stuff for magazine publication because it's just so convenient.

I've looked quite carefully at these units in the past, they do a scan at 1800 x 1800, 42 bit.

you can find details at

Jessops Scanner (http://www.jessops.com/search/viewproduct.cfm?product=JESDFS1800AFL&BRAND=&CONTINUE=false&FEATS=&FIRSTPRICE=&KEYWORD=&LEVEL=&MODELNUMBER=&NEWQUERY=True&NODE=230&ORD=ASC&ORDERBY=&QUANTITY=10&REFINE=&SEARCH_FOR=&SEARCHNODE=0&SEARCHURL=showcase.cfm&SECONDPRICE=&SHOWCASEID=72&STARTROW=1&SUBS=&WORD_SEARCH=N&)

I didn't buy one purely because I've got no money at the mo!

I've currently got an Epson Perfection 1250 with tranny adapter which does the job v v well (for me anyway!).

A friend has the Perfection 1650 Photo which is even better.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the comments.

I've just come across the new minolta dimage scan dual III which is 2820dpi, does 35mm and APS (I have a lot of APS film as well) plus it has a similar nifty auto scratch removal jobbie like the nikon - for around £297

Think I might go for this one.

The Minolta was high on my list but the Nikon came up first at a sensible price. I'd go for it.

Johnny - I've just spotted the Minolta Scan Dual II at a stupidly cheap price and it's a great unit:

Cheers for that Matt, but I've decided to go for the Scan Dual III as its going for £280 online, I think the extra £30 is probably worth it.

Now £264 at dabs.com!
