Low bass output via 5.1 analogue output?

Yes, I'm talking about the low bass output via the 5.1 analogue outs!! I've started, read and participated in a few threads reference this...but does LPCM suffer from the same trait?
Just got home with my BD player, threw in Casino Royale and the opening scene where Bond gets his first kill in the toilet is very, very bassy. I hadn't turned down the LFE channel after removing the cables from the HD DVD player. So, should it sound like this or should I turn it down?

I've never really understood this low bass output issue. I have HD DVD and BD, both via 5.1 analogue for audio, and the bass is huge on both formats.

In fact, the bass setting is the only manual adjustment I make "on the fly" -it is just that some soundtracks are too bassy and you have to back it off a bit. I do find that with blu-ray I have to back off the bass bit more than with HD DVD, especially on 5.1 uncompressed PCM tracks. This is generally +/- 5db on the amp (that way I can make adjustments using my remote).

Problem is there is a bass level control on my sub, then another control on my amp, and again there are level settings in each of the HD players (in the set up screens). Trying to get the bass set up correctly was a nightmare. Once you do get it right make a note of the settings, and then leave well alone!
