Configuring Microphone

Can anyone help?

I'm trying to get my headset microphone configured so that I can record my voice when using a language program.

I've connected the microphone jack but when I try to record all I get is nothing. If I check the microphone boost in the advanced options, I can record but only with a huge amount of static and my voice is barely heard.

What should I do?

I'm using a Compaq Evo, WinXPSP2 and the onboard Intel integrated audio. I've got the recording volume for the microphone on max
I'm not good with hardware and don't what to try.

Thanks in advance

David
