Dell 8400 Optical Drive not working

I have Dell Dimension 8400 with a 16x dual layer dvd/cd burner combo drive thingy.....

Due to a system problem I had at the time I update the BIOS from version A06 to A09, which solved the issue I had at the time.

Problem is that now the DVD drive isn't working since the BIOS update, it worked fine before but now the DVD drawer only opens half way when you press the eject button and the drive does not seem to be able to read anything that you put in it, windows just sees the drive as empty.

I am running XP if that helps and the drive does not recognise discs of any type, I have checked the BIOS screen at bootup and it can see the drive.

Can anyone help me out with a fix...

Re: Dell 8400 Optical Drive not working

Have you looked on the dell support site ? Sometimes there is a pin hole that you can use to open the drive. I remember having a few dell laptops that you had to do this with before you powered the system up. It might be the the drive has not reset its catches.

I have yes, I downloaded and installed several patches that addressed issues with various dvd formats but I am stuck with the same problem.

The drive has a pinhole manual release, it works OK (I used it when going through the DELL troubleshooting), I will open the drive manually and then power up the system and see what happens.

I was thinking that the BIOS update may have corrupted the Optical drive drivers in some way, does anybody know how I can uninstall and reinstall the drivers ?

Re: Dell 8400 Optical Drive not working

Tried powering up the system with the drive drawer open but it didn't make any difference.

Open to suggestions....

Try disconnecting the drive and booting into windows......shut down, reconnect and see if windows re-finds it. Might be worth a try.......

Tried that, it didn't work I think the drive may be fried.

It's a phillips 16x DVD RW+- DVD/CD combo model 8631, it 18months old and I have only burned a dozen or so DVD's with it but after looking on google last night it appears I have been lucky for it to have lasted as long as it has.

Any suggestions for a replacement

Needs to be black and around £25-£30.

The A List drive in PC Pro is the Lite-On Super AllWrite 20A1P, which is available in black:

They recommend the Pioneer DVR-111 as an alternative:
