I have a Quantum Fireball 10Gb HDD which I think might be broken. It is not recognised by the BIOS and when it spins up there is a niose like a ball bearing being dropped on a metal table.
Does this sound like a terminal problem or something that can be fixed?
Thanks

It's shagged if it's making that kind of noise. Time for replacement.

Never worth fixing hard drives IMO (unless it's just so you can quickly get some valuable data off it and onto your replacement drive). Just buy a new one as kiwiranger advised - you'll probably find you can get a 40GB+ turbo drive for the same or less than you paid for your 10GB :)

I learned this lesson the hard way. In my final year at University, my HDD went with no warning and I lost everything. Offcourse I didn't have any backups either. I would have failed my degree if it had not have been for one data recovery company who helped me out for a few hundred pounds. Others were quoting thousands! The company was called CBL tech if anyone is interested.
Since then I've had another HDD fail but thankfully I had full backups of everything. It's amazing how much important data you just don't realise you need until it's gone.

I know I lost all my porn and mp3s :(
hehe
One thing to bear in mind, is that many HDDs have 3 year warranties, so you can ring up the manufacturer and send em back :)

At the moment yes, but many are planning to, or currently, offer only 1 year warranties.......
