picture seems cloudy

hi.

just been tinkering with my pc to get it to wirk as a media center (just storing fims and music for playback)

when i play a dvd through the dvd drive the picture seems cloudy and doesnt look like its being upscaled to 720p any suggestions?

i've posted here as i'm not sure if its the software i'm using (media centre classic) or if its a hardware setup problem

gfx card is galaxy gf 7600gs o/c its connected to a 46" samsung LCD via a dvi-d--- HDMI cable (not the best one in the world)

i've used the cards sotware to clock it at what its saying is the optimum and set the resolution to 720p

would a change in sofware give me a much better picture? if so what should i use? i'm using XP pro at the moment but will be changing to MCE soon.

thanks in advance andy

Re: picture seems cloudy

I'm not sure what 'media centre classic' is!

I use the VGA port to connect my Samsung, as I find it's easier to set up than DVI/HDMI, and I get 1:1 pixel mapping at 1360x768. You might find you get a better picture too.

Re: picture seems cloudy

if i use the VGA i dont get a picture when my gfx card is in the pci-e slot. (there's not a VGA port on the gfx card)

would it be worth getting a DVI-D to VGA cable and doing it that way?

will it still upscale the picute to 720p?

oh and media centre classic, it might be media player classic, i'll have to check but its media 'something' classic

Don't bother with DVI to VGA, it won't help. You'll just have to keep playing with your DVI card. Have you tried PowerStrip?

I hope you understand what upscaling really is. You can't expect an ordinary DVD to look great on a 46" screen! Some software like fddshow will try to resample to content up to 720p, but you can't put in picture information that was never there!

Your PC will create an image that is 1280x720 pixels (720p) but the DVD movie itself will be it's original resolution.

Re: picture seems cloudy

yeah i know that, just want to try it to see if the picture is any better. if i can get rid of the cloudyness i'll be more than happy.

i'll have a play with the settings and see what happens.
