sorry for all the questions folks, i will try to make this my last one for now.
i am trying to print wirelessly from my macbook to the printer which is connected to my pc via a usb cable. i am running windows xp and the printer is a lexmark x1160.
so far, i think that i have been able to find the printer because when i send a file to print, the pc goes into print mode and the printer switches on. thats the good news. the bad news is that the printer makes a noise as if it is about to start printing but then nothing happens. ive tried printing the same thing from my pc and it works fine.
any idead on what i can do?
thanx again

Haven't a clue, but Google is your frend. Perhaps this (http://www.erikjheels.com/2007-03-10-how-to-print-os-x-to-xp.html) will help.

thanx ancient, that link ran through what i have been trying all evening. i think the problem is that my x1160 is not selectable from the list.
one thing that i do not understand how to do is "option click". any ideas?

Apologies if this is stating the obvious, but to me (a new Mac user), "option click" implies holding the option key (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Option_key) and clicking the mouse button.

One option is to connect the printer to an Airport Extreme. Then all you need to do is point your print driver to the IP address of the printer, though the Admin utility should help you do this. You can even share hard disks the same way and it works from both Windows and Mac

peteJust use the address of the Airport base station; 10.0.1.1 unless you changed it.
To use the printer from a computer using Mac OS X:
1 Open Printer Setup Utility (located in Applications/Utilities).
2 Select the printer from the list.
If the printer is not in the list, click Add and choose Bonjour from the pop-up menu,
then select the printer from the list.
To use the printer from a computer using Windows:
1 Open “Printers and Faxes” from the Start menu.
2 Click Add Printer and then follow the onscreen instructions.
3 Select “Local printer attached to this computer” and deselect “Automatically detect
and install my Plug and Play printer.”
4 In the “Select the Printer Port” screen, click “Create a new port” and choose Standard
TCP/IP Port from the pop-up menu.
5 Click Next and follow the onscreen instructions.
6 In “Printer Name or IP Address,” enter 10.0.1.1. “IP_10.0.1.1” is generated as the port name.
Note:
If you gave your AirPort Express a different IP address, use it instead of 10.0.1.1.
The port will be named with the address you enter.
7 Select Standard for Device Type and select your printer in the list.

Or maybe you haven't got an Airport, just a shared Windows printer and what you want is this:
When choosing the printer to use, choose "Add printer..."
Then choose "more printers"
Then choose to print using "windows printing"
Your PC with shared printer should then be available to choose. It will be in your printer list from then on.

thanks ancient. i got this far but all that happens is that the printer switches on but nothing prints. any ideas what is wrong? when i get to choose from a list of lexmark printers, the 1100 series is not on there.
thanks
