Re: whats your favourite web browser for mac?

I used to use firefox because I couldn't do without adblock, but since finding safariblock, i've switched back to safari. If there's something that doesn't work in safari I switch to firefox, but that's very rare now.

I tried shiira for a while which has(had) some nice features but they seem to be changing those for worse replacements in my opinion, and the development seems to have ground to a halt.

Some of the new features in leopard safari look like they should be very nice.

Re: whats your favourite web browser for mac?

thanx for the input guys, the reason i asked was because the very first site i went to wasnt compatible with safari but was with firefox (yahoo mail beta). i havent had any problems with other sites since though so will probably stick with safari and go back to standard yahoo mail.
im loving the macbook so far - apart from my greasy finger marks on the track pad .
cheers

Re: whats your favourite web browser for mac?

If you want to try with sites that sniff and reject Safari, you can turn on the debug menu (in terminal.app, type "defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1"), then select the browser you want it to pretend to be. Many sites have no problem if you choose MSIE 6.0.

Opera.

The best by miles if you ask me.

Safari is ok, but its a memory hog.

Re: whats your favourite web browser for mac?

I liked Safari initially, but went back to Firefox which I had previously used on WinXP and Ubuntu Linux, as I like having the custom search engines and easier tab switching (control-tab as opposed to shift-cmd-{} keys).

Opera kept crashing on me, although it was the best browser I had used on XP, so I'll try it again one day.

Anyone use Camino? Anything exciting for Safari in Leopard?

Depends what you think is exciting

Webclip is quite nice - the ability to make a widget by drawing a box on a web page.

They are extending the spotlight live search style into safari so you while you type a text search, it highlights the words found and dims out everything else.

Apparently they are implementing CSS3 resizable text areas. Doesn't sound exciting to read but it will be nice to be able to resize text entry fields on web forms just by dragging the corner.

They have implemented tab reordering by dragging, and you can drag a tab out to make a new window, drag them between browser windows, and reconsolidate all tabs from all windows into one.

As is usual, these things are more impressive when used than merely described, and i'm aware that some of these have been used in other browsers

Re: whats your favourite web browser for mac?

After rying out loads of different ones, I've gone back to using Safari with both the Saft plugin and the indispensible Inquisitor.

With those installed, I think Safari kicks the ass of pretty much every other browser.

Also, check out OmniWeb. It's pretty interesting, but not free. Free to demo though.

I use firefox. Seems quick and works with most sites. Plus I like all the plug ins.

Hey, I'd forgotten about that! I think that will be a feature I will use fairly regularly. It seems as if Apple's next browser is doing what IE7 is for MS, catching up with the open source alternatives in terms of functionality.

Re: whats your favourite web browser for mac?

I have played with Safari, Camino, Firefox, and Shiira. Safari is the one I use for RSS and come back to most often. I agree with one of the other posters, Inquistor is a great tool to have installed.

Firefox for me is for sites that don't like Safari.

Camino is a great fast browser with Growl support but lacks RSS which for me is quite important and seems to think that every site is trying to do pop ups. It does have a spellchecker which is great.

I am doing this response on Shiira. It has alot of promise but doesn't seem to like all RSS feeds so far.

My default is still Safari.

Re: whats your favourite web browser for mac?

For RSS feeds I recommend RSS Menu.

It sits in your menu bar rather than use your browser, has Growl support so you know when there are new articles and takes up very little space.

Re: whats your favourite web browser for mac?

I was almost tempted back to Safari by Webkit (a nightly open source bug fix of Safari) but miss having my homepage being able to open in new tabs - a small thing maybe, but that's all that divides Mac browsers for me.

I like Camino but don't like the fact it doesn't remember your forms (addresses, yes, but web-page forms, no) - another small detail maybe.

Firefox is the best for me, I like its use of extensions, even though it has little bugs like copy & paste not working sometimes. I use this GrApple web theme to make it look a bit more Mac-like and also use the intel optimised builds from this web-page (2.0.0.3 hasn't been released yet in intel optimised format).

For me the definitive Mac browser has yet to be released. Maybe Safari when Leopard is released, or maybe Firefox 3.0 when it will be a native cocoa app with cocoa widgets.
