.... So is this typical of a PS3 Purchaser ????
Noticed this post in the LCD forum.
"Don't want to spen more than £400 as it is only for my PS3, its not my main TV in the front room, just for gaming"
Do you think that this is a typical view from a prospective PS3 purchaser? If so, what's the implications for the PS3 and it's impact on Blu-ray as a film format. Is it going to have the impact that so many people seem to think it will? The whole thread is worth a read, there was one mention of Blu-ray the last time I looked.
Personally, I think this is a typical view and the PS3 will predominently be a games machine. I don't dispute that there's bound to be a rise in sales of BD discs after Friday here in the UK. But will it last?

The sale of BD discs will go up the same as HD DVD did when the 360 add on was released.
The PS3 will always be a games console first and foremost. Anybody that is truly interested in BD as a home cinema format will buy a dedicated player.

Re: .... So is this typical of a PS3 Purchaser ????
blu-ray players have a 5-1 ratio over hd-dvd but they can only manage a 2-1 ratio on sales. What does this say about the average ps3 player. I think that sony has overestimated the sales potential of their console in regards to movies by a massive amount.

Re: .... So is this typical of a PS3 Purchaser ????
Anyone who bought a 360 add on bought it for one reason only and that was to watch HD-DVDs. The same is not going to be true of the PS3. It is first and foremost a games console and for the great majority that will be what it's used for, games. Indeed, I'll be greatly surprised if it has more than a minor impact on Bluray sales. In the short term there may be a boost in sales but I'd expect that to fall off pretty rapidly. IMHO.

Re: .... So is this typical of a PS3 Purchaser ????
I think the best way to guestimate the impact is to look at actual sales of BD disks since the introduction of the PS3. Quite clearly, sales are massively above what they were, and I simply don't believe that this is because Sony, Panny and Samsung have suddenly shifted tens of thousands of standalone players.
To me, that infers that "some" PS3 owners will be using them as a BD player.
Have to say, that if I used an AV amp with a HDMI input, that I think I would have chosen a PS3. It's cheaper, has the same picture quality and you get a free games machine thrown in. Looks like a good deal to me.

Re: .... So is this typical of a PS3 Purchaser ????
Alternatively - I think Sony may have underestimated the impact the sales price will have on the PS3. Im from Ireland and I was in a store where they are advertising the PS3 for sale at €650. Now Im not really into gaming and therefore wouldn't even think of spending that much on a games machine, but I can't help thinking that the majority of parents will baulk at this price for the kiddies. That's a seriously expensive price for a teenager (when most of the PS2 went to)

Re: .... So is this typical of a PS3 Purchaser ????
All these points are valid, but I was trying to get more comment on the post I linked to in my OP:
"Don't want to spend more than £400 as it is only for my PS3, its not my main TV in the front room, just for gaming "
If this is typical, then the implications are not good for the 'Trojan Horse' theorists, are they?

Yes...and no.
Sales are indeed massively above what they were. But remember a couple of things.
Sales were tiny to start with. In a year's time the number of stand alone players will dwarf the numbers we have today, and PS3's impact won't be so great.
It does appear that a number of people with a PS3 are using it as a BD player.
But how many of these are PS3 games console buyers, and how many are people who bought the PS3 to use solely as a BD player.
Anyone buying into HD DVD or BD at this stage knows the score. We all knowe the price of BD stand alones, and we all know there'll be nothing as cheap as the PS3 until Summer.
If you want a 'cheap as possible' BD player, you'll have a long wait if you don't buy the PS3. In comparison, if you want a 'cheap as possible' HD DVD player, you might want to hold out for the arrival of the Chinese.
I'm buying a PS3 on Friday, and using it almost entirely for films. I hope that my film-buying habits won't be logged somewhere as that of a games console buyer who's decided to watch BDs as well. Because I aren't one of those.
In short, after Friday, will sales of PS3 players (standalone or PS3-for-sole-use-as-BD-player) grind to a halt?
