Just topped up a few new Criterion releases and was wondering about:
Ran
Brief Encounter.
Has anyone tried these or have any other new Criteion recommendations?
Thanks

I've probably got too many versions of Ran: a 2003 Wellspring Region 0 (two commentaries), the 2 disc Criterion and a French release (without English subtitles). Annoyingly, the French release is probably the best picture transfer although the Criterion is still very good. If you've seen other Kurosawa films, Ran is a late-period Kurosawa where his filming style became more stately but it grips the attention throughout. The grim story is based on Shakespeare's King Lear with some great battle scenes between huge armies included. There are some interesting extras on the Criterion as well, a 70 minute "making of" documentary.
Other Criterions I like are Traffic (which has a great extra on the editing sequnce) and the Wes Anderson films, Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums.

I was considering Royal Tenenbaums, and had put it on a wish list. I will look further at the others as well. Thanks.

I'm planning on getting the new remastered versions of Yojimbo/Sanjuro
Meant to be very good, up to the standard of their remastered Seven Samurai release, which is also a must own. :smashin:

How have you got on with the long good friday and the man who fell to earth ? I was interested in them. I have the original The Third Man and was not sure what to do about this new one!

Just got The Man Who Fell To Earth as well as the new multi disc remasters of Amarcord and Seven Samurai. All excellent.
The original Criterion release of Amarcord was one of the grainiest films I had ever seen, and non-anamorphic to boot. I always found this frustrating as this is probably one of my all time Top Ten movies and I hated watching the transfer.
The new transfer is in another league altogether and I've watched it twice in rapid succession. :)

Oh, and a second for BIGRED's nomination of Le Cercle Rouge.

Any idea when the remastered Yojimbo will be out? If it's anything like the Seven Samurai it'll be a must have!

It came out at the end of January, I only found out about it recently by chance.
The Yojimbo/Sanjuro double pack is the one I'll be going for ; click (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=760244)

It has a better transfer than Seven Samurai and it's streets ahead of the BFI 2000 release. The best Kurosawa black and white picture quality on Criterion is Red Beard, but that film might not be to everyones' taste.

Plan is for:
The 39 Steps
Amarcord: 2 Disc Edition
Brief Encounter
Heaven Can Wait
Kind Hearts And Coronets
Le Cercle Rouge (The Red Circle)
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Ran
The Third Man 2 discer
Two Samurai Films By Akira Kurosawa: Yojimbo / Sanjuro
to add to, already ordered:
Fanny And Alexander: Special Edition Five Disc Set
For All Mankind (also got From The Earth To The Moon)
Seven Samurai: 3 Disc Edition
have I missed any new goodies? (Have most of the others mentioned already bar Red Beard. Sister, Long good friday and Royal Tenenbaums will have to come from elsewhere later).

Well then we are in for a treat - the SS release was superb!
