whilst relatively unknown in the uk, dave chappelle is currently perhaps the most well known comedian in america, the eddie murphy of the 00's. funnily enough, eddies brother charlie murphy is one of the popular cast members on the show, with his "true stories" sequence

his chapelle show on comedy central was a huge success in 2003, leading to an even more popular second series, however fame got the better of him and he aborted recording of the third series and dissapeared out of public life for a while

between series however, he arranged a free concert in september 2004, featuring the first time the fugees had played in 7 years, along with a number of okplayer artists such as erykah badu, common, john legend, kayne west, bilal, mos def, talkib kweli, ded prez, big daddy kane, ?uestlove, kool g and the roots

this concert was inspired by the 1973 wattstax concert, held in the streets of brooklyn for the people

the movie wasn't released until march last year in the theatres, and later in the year on dvd, so it's showing on bbc2 is comparitively early

dave is the host of the show, but plays second place to the excellent live hip hop performances. whilst kayne west is present, this is before his huge rise to fame, this is a bling free concert, with real musicians and real talent. likewise john legend (who plays on albums by the fugees, kayne, common, etc) who was an unkown at the time

this is such an excellent documentary of the making of a fantastic live show. this also shows there is a lot more to hip hop than vide-ho's and limo's

i think it's on at 11.15pm, i should have gave more notice. check it out, it's 7.3 on imdb, which ain't bad for a concert movie

I'm also surprised that it's showed up on TV so quickly.

It's slow to get going but once it does, Block Party is superb. The DVD has an excellent 5.1 mix which will be sorely missed on the TV showing.

That wasn't too bad. A shame we don't see more of Dave Chappelle over here.

sorry, i didn't see that. i was going to post on saturday when i saw it in the paper but forgot about it. i thought a few folks would be intersted in it but would overlook it by name or timeslot

i guess it's broadcast so early as documentaries don't usually have a long wait till they are on tv, likewise music concerts. i guess most sales etc will be upon initial release and quickly die off. whilst it's out on dvd in the uk now, i don't think it came out that long ago, but i would doubt the uk sales would be much. i don't have cable, but i'm pretty sure his show isn't broadcast over here at all. i got his shows on dvd. some of his movie appearances are good, like half baked. he's also in con air

so anyways, what did everyone think of it? was that a great show or what? of course it depends if you like that type of music, but it's a great introduction to it if not, it perhaps might open the eyes and ears of fans of more commercial rnb and hip hop to show real music by real musicians

i've seen some of the acts live myself, and they are really great in the flesh. common was one of the best live show's i've seen. when i saw him in 2001/2 he did a set, changing outfit between each song to show the change in music over the years, and more impressively he didn't swear once, even tho his album had more swearing than the departed. eryka was completely different to the block party, she went on and off stage like she was cleopatra, more than royalty, just another level (common & erykah are and item on/off)

whos the guy playing the guitar for dave in pretty much the last scene and dave shakes his hand after. Hes in the film a couple of times but i dont think i caught him on stage, perhaps part of the roots? He has a sound that id like to listen to some more and wouldnt mind checking out his work

i've not seen the film in ages, but it's probably cody chestnut, who has also played with the roots. a damn good guitar player. google him up and you'll see if it's him. i think the credits at the end of the film tell you who is in each band, and imdb lists most of the participants, but not the instruments

In case people are interested, Chapelle's sketch show is on FX on Sky. Usually on about 23:00 or so.

I got this on the R1 unrated DVD as soon as it came out. I'm a big fan of Daves and have all the show DVDs aswell.
My fave bit was when they started to do "Jesus Walks" in the street. Sounded so good.
Also liked it when he actually asked the band to play there.
