Keep things in their proper folders and learn what the Dock can do. Regularly used folders can be placed in the Dock and accessed contextually with either ctrl click or right click, or in the Finder Sidebar. Hide the HD using Finder/Prefs/General and access it by either cmd N or clicking Finder in the Dock. Hide (cmd H or alt click off) apps as you move to others and use cmd tab (or set the scroll ball to app switcher (SystemPrefs/Mouse&Keyboard)) to switch between quickly.

Mine can be seen in "My Set Up" below.

The laptop on the footstool is a 15" 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4 that replaced my old one which is now my "server".

The server on top of the AV Rack is my old 15" 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4, the bottom 1/4 of the screen doesn't work but being hooked up to the TV and Projector it doesn't matter.
I control it with an IR Keyspan remote receiver and my Harmony 895 via an RF extender or with "Remote Desktop" on my new laptop.
It's also got a Sonica M Audio USB-Optical external sound card for 5.1 from DVD's and downloads.

Not very good photo's of them but it's all I've got at the moment.

The DVD drive has always been on the front on the 15" and 17" aluminium Powerbooks / Macbook Pro's. I believe the Titanium Powerbooks had the DVD drive in a different place.

The 12" Powerbook has the DVD drive on the right hand side.

nope definitely some difference, nothing to do with being at the front. my macbook pro has no rim around the dvd drive, and it is no where near as high up - the slot is closer to the bottom than the top. I had a look at my mate's which is a Core2Duo and the dvd drive is the same as mine, strange. He however complains about it making a lot of noise... looks as though they've changed them.

I stand corrected! I thought you were talking about the actual position of the drive, not the rim etc around it!

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/127/412711512_cd03a0abe9.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stew/412711512/)

It's a G4, 1.25Ghz, 512MB Ram, 40Gb slug most of the time, really doesn't cope well with Photoshop and InDesign being open at the same time unfortunately... really want to get myself a Mac Pro however being a student kills that idea for a while yet :( If anyone wants to swap for a PM G5 or really generously wants to swap for a MP you know where to come ;) :P

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.woodford/My%20Mac.jpg

It's an Intel 1.66GHz mac mini bought last year. The thing below it is a LaCie mini 250GB Hard-drive which I keep my films on. Also the black thing just to the left of my Onkyo receiver is a Formac 80GB external HD which I backup to. I really like my Mac and wouldn't swap it for a Windows PC anyday. (Whoops should really give my scanner a dust). And I'm also really glad to see that AVforums has a Mac section now :smashin: .

Doesn't the screen size bother you? I was going to go for a 20'' imac but realsied that it would be too small for my bedroom. I am thinking of getting a MB/MBP but 13.3 inches on a MB sounds too small

jenic
07-03-2007, 10:44 PM
I think the size is perfect, its portable but usable. It did take a few hours going from a 15" "square" laptop to a 13" wide screen but its now just normal. If i need a larger screen then ive got the 19" dell sitting behing it.

Whats the point in a portable with a large screen? Unless its a desktop replacement then there really isnt a reason to get a larger screen.

It also fits on my bed perfect at night, my old laptop was just too big.

Hi Guys
This kit looks really good, I have always used PCs but what I am seeing with a mates new Vista Laptop and the problems he is having I am looking at a new Macbook and I like what I am seeing so far, looks really nice kit judging by your photos. Not sure how long it will take me to adapt to a new Op system though.

Well, with nifty one click features like web gallery as you've seen there, plus iWeb, I think it's brilliant. And now they offer 10GB... I'd say it's definitely worth getting. I'll certainly be renewing my subscription :)

And the Macs would be nothing without the Coke Zero! If you buy any Macs you must by convention purchase Coke Zero alongside it to add to the coolness factor!

Yes it is painfull. It was fine for a few months, then when i booted it up on Thursday i had one one in the middle of the screen and a few in close proximity. They (the guy at the repair shop) said they would have to send a photo to Apple to see if they would replace it... The cheek!

I'm still waiting to here back.

The good thing about using the ibook again is the fact that it has just the best keyboard in the whole wide world. It's a joy to type and spell incorrectly!

I can't believe how tidy everyones desktops are.

I've got 52 items on my desktop. I even created a folder on the HD and called it Desktop Replacement and aliased it on the Desktop to try and keep it tidy.

I have a tidy up every now and again but don't think I could work without using it the way I do.

It's not like I'm new to the mac, been using them for the last 13 years!

Its force of habit from Windows. If there isn't of stuff on the desktop, it loads faster (just like red cars go faster) :rotfl:

Windows aside - it is advised under OSX to try and keep your desktop as clear as possible to help the OS manage itself properly though ...

I didn't know that.

I'd have thought that seeing as I've got about 187 square inches of space, I could fill it.

my desktop is usually cluttered - currently there are 36 items on there (about 3.5 gigs worth. Doesn't seem to do any harm.

Jon

hmm - how can I embed fullsize pic instead of thumbnail ?

Stealth - there is a worldwide wait for the bluetooth keyboards - could order without and get now and sell the wired one on ? ... although I understand when the stock arrives they will be offering a complete boxed wireless bundle for the first time ... (as oppose to shipping seperately)

Post it to .mac (if you use it) and link from there or use imageshack (http://imageshack.us), maybe.

There are some really nice pictures being used here. Love the mountain scene with the lake and the teddybears eyes. Maybe we could share the wealth.

The ones I have though are mainly FHM / Maxim style so perhaps not appropriate but I have these 2 Transformers ones which I have in their own folder and have set change background to 5 seconds so they fade in and out.

First up, the hardware:smashin:
Got my 24" G5 iMac in February this year. 2GB ram, 160GB hd and 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU.
The Mac Mini was bought on Wednesday at the new Glasgow Apple store. It's the 1.83 Ghz base model.

and here are a couple of screen grabs of my iMac.

Second pic is of my Parallels install running my old XP PC as a virtual machine :) Still need it for work and a few apps that I haven't got round to replacing with Mac ones.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a38/wicker_man666/wm_homesetup_jun08.jpg

Specs:

Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Santa Rosa 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD)
Apple PowerMac G4 Cube (450MHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, GeForce 2mx, 17" Studio LCD Display)
Wired keyboard + Mighty Mouse, Griffin PowerMate, Griffin Elevator, Elgato EyeTV Hybrid
iPod Classic 160GB (Black), 3rd gen (40GB)
Western Digital My Book Pro 750GB and 500GB external FW800 drives
Epson C86 inkjet, Samsung ML-1510 mono laser, HP Scanjet 5500c
Panasonic SC-PM17 micro hi-fi system, Beko 14" CRT TV, Sony PS2, Logitech Harmony 688

I plan on purchasing a 24" LCD at a later date for my MBP and to replace the 14" CRT, but it looks like I may hold off because I am currently looking at upgrading my hi-fi to a stereo integrated amp + bookshelf speakers.

Thanks, mine has a couple of the infamous mould lines, but I brought it second hand a couple of years ago (to replace my G3 iMac).

Unfortunately, I don't get to use it much because it stays at home and I use my MacBook Pro at Uni. My family occasionally use it though, mainly for calling (skype) and I use it as a backup for important files.

One day, I plan to fit the innards of a Mac Mini and turn it into a Media machine (maybe when I've got my own place).

24" iMac and 15" MacPro both upgraded to 4Gb RAM (rest of the office only got 20"!). iPhone not in dock at the time. Mac Mini at home in 5.1 system, iPod Nano 8Gb at home unused since iPhone purchase, iPhone 3G 16Gb on order, seriously considering a 24" iMac as bedroom TV.
