Turn Off Cleartype!!!
Got vista yesterday, and It was really bad on my eyes, even thought I set the res to 1024*768 it looked more like 640*480, text was very hard to read for more than a few seconds, anyway turned off cleartype and it like I have a new monitor, looks fine now, just as good as XP, so if oyu are havine trouble reading the text in vista turn off cleartype.., also do the same for Internet Explorer...

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
Depends if you have a LCD or CRT monitor. ClearType is meant to be used on LCD monitors not CRT monitors.
I find having ClearType turned on, helps alot.

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
That's your problem. You need to have a high resolution LCD screen to make cleartype look nice. Is that the native resolution of your screen also? Cleartype on low resolution screen looks horrible, and even worse if you've not set to native and using CC.
I've enabled CC, 20" 1680x1050.

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
Yep I'm running Cleartype on 1920x1200/32, makes a big, big positive difference....
Didn't think people are still using 1024x768

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
This OP beat me by a couple of hours. I was gonna post about Cleartype too.
Since installing Vista I have thought text looked real crap and has been hurting my eyes.
I have a 19" Sony connected with DVI set at 1280 x 1024.
If Cleartype is supposed to make it look better, I think it makes it worse!!!
I tried changing it from Cleartype to Standard and eventually turned font smoothing off. But now the Vista font looks a bit thin and all shadows disappear?
Of course if you go to the link they give in Help and Support for the Cleartype web pages it then tell you the Cleartype Tuning Tool won't work with Vista???
Why if it is designed to make text look better on an LCD but anytime I turn it on it looks worse?

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
LCD/1024*768/75HZ, I still cannot get VIsta to look as sharp as XP, I mean to me it looks like it's running at 640*480 instead of 1024*768, have played with all the graphics settings but still is hard on the eyes, anyone know have to make vista easy on the yes, the text more sharper?
Dejongj I'd welcome the thought of you buying me a higher resolution display, I mean yo ucan get a 20" 1680*1050 for less the £200 these days?...

Cleartype was released with XP back in 2001, and anyone having an LCD with a resolution greater than 1024*768 back then msut of been rolling in a lots of dough, anyway it was useless then and still is now..., would much rather have it turned off...

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
Are you sure Vista has installed the correct display driver?
I installed Vista on an old IBM thinkpad a few days back that had an unsupported onboard VGA chip, Vista happily installed a "Standard" SVGA driver, set resolution to 1024x768x32 and never mentioned it.
first i knew about it was when i checked the dispaly adaptor in device manager to find out why Sleep wasn't working properly.
With a hacked display driver now installed (thanks for lack of old chip support ATI ) screen output and cleartype are now vastly improved

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
Definitely something else wrong....I've got an old (Apple Studio) 1024x768 LCD, my wife's laptop has got an 1280x800 LCD, my daughters desktop has got a 1280x1024 LCD and all are much sharper less pixelated with Cleartype on....
My laptop with 1920x1200 was only £1k and that was 4 years ago! So it is not such the expense as you make it out to be....
There is no point in running an LCD at 75Hz unless you want to watch PAL video, so that is where I would start first of all....Secondly make very certain you run the LCD's native resolution, anything else will always be horrible and Cleartype will just make it more obvious....And thirdly make certain it is not your eyes that are wrong (Only kidding)...
But hey if you prefer it off, so be it....But I wouldn't let it rest as the improvements are fast....And I do remember the improvements even in 2001

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
I'm using the correct Nvidia driver, and the native res of my display, just one of them Vista issues they overlooked, as well as Nvidia not releasign a fully stable drive, I mean no Video overlay controls?..., anway apart from that have Vist MCE issues, the menu is pretty crappy, anyway to get the old MCE navigation back?, also the vidoe PQ is terrible, like frame drops and all sorts, pretty much unwatchable.., and dejongj I use 75HZ casue of MCE, but when I use the "enablerefreshrate" reg hack, the MCE menu is very slow in full screen..., this MCE is just terrible...

Ok I didn't appreciate you were talking about an MCE box...For a 10ft interface you don't need Cleartype I would say....So how big is the screen that you run in 1024x768 resolution with MCE...I am getting confused as that is not a video resolution!? Graphics yes, but a video....
The drivers from nVidia are indeed not quite finished, no hardware acceleration for purevideo is just daft I think....But I must admit that on my MCE machine (which I didn't list before, but that is connected to a plasma and not an LCD ;-) )....I have a nVidia 6600 and the Microsoft driver does all I need it to do....720p in ultra smooth 50Hz...Perfect if it wasn't for the lack of hardware acceleration but my dual core doesn't mind too much....

Re: Turn Off Cleartype!!!
I have a 15" tft, and purevideo hardware decoding is available in Vista, i'm using it, for HD-DVD playback I get 90% CPU usage with it off, 60% with it on, so it is working, but gives are really grey/washed out picture, as DXVA has always given, so without the video overlay controls it is useless..
