View Full Version : Any Quark users?
Hey guys!
Im a graphic designer and starting a new job on Monday. Really looking forward to it but I have to use Quark (probably v6 but not sure) and ive been using inDesign cs2 for as long as it came out.
Can i change shortcuts to indesign ones? As i already know a DTP program it wont be a major shock but is there anything that is really different to inDesign? Does it support transparency?
Ive googled it but all im getting is info for quark users switching to inDesign not the other way around.
Thanks Laura

quark does have a custom shortcuts feature, although i've only used it once or twice, i'd presume you can fully customise them, if not, there's an app out there somewhere called livekeys XT 1.5 by badia software that may help you, it allows modified shortcuts to be added to quark
funny you should be going back to quark, when the industry seems to be going the indesign way these days...
hope this helps
Quark's text/graphic boxes can be a bit of a pain to use when you are used to 'place' in InDesign ... it also doesn't have useful things like the eyedropper for applying styles and the design/editability of frames/etc leaves a lot to be desired !!
Anyway good luck with the new job and get them to move to InDesign !! the Intel-native CS3 suite should be announced 27 March and available soon after :-)
Jon
Thanks for that. I know in indesign you have the option of using quark shortcuts so just wondered if that was possible in Quark.
The bigger companies do tend to still use Quark from what i've been told.

Thanks Jon. I got my last company to move from Quark 5 to CS2 so maybe i can do it again

I handle data in commercial print for one of Britain's largest printers, and inDesign is causing us loads of grief. The PDF's just don't seem to render correctly in Prinergy, especially the transparent layers and spot colours. Come back Quark, all is forgiven.

Lots have switched to InDesign though - including many of the big magazine publishers (Bauer, Natmags and the like). Most of the Art Directors/Artworkers I know are finding it much more user friendly.
I can't actually remember the last time I used Quark... can't say I miss it.

I used Quark for years, and sometimes use 7. But i tend to stick to Indesign CS2 now, as Quark 7 is rubbish. For me its far to buggy, etc. Quark 6.5 is fine.
Is there any reason why you cant take Indesign with you?, you can convert Quark docs to Indesign, and it gives your new employers a chance to get more work in by using new software.
Best of luck.
I have been told our company will be up for sale so me and all others might lose our jobs :( , so i will be looking for a new job too.

Yes we have had problems with transparancy with our printers, we had to make transparent layers into tiffs to then be exported as pdf. Probably a better way but its how we did it.

Cost is probably one of the main factors. The printer i use for my freelance work says she will be buying the new indesign cs3 and not bothering with Quark 7 as its so much cheaper.

Sorry to hear you may lose your job and good luck with finding something else.
I have quark 6.5 at home as well as cs2, its ok but i love illustrator and indesign is very similar so I always choose indesign for things. I suppose learning Quark is something extra to add to my skills.
Gonna be a busy & boring weekend learning software i don't like :(

Does a PC quark user count. :smashin: I know it maybe a first. Indesign is a bit like freehand a few people use it a few don't.
++ Does anyone have any samples of the work they do. I would like to see a part of the forum that covers stuff like this.

Used Quark a few times, every time it's been on a PC so maybe that ruined the experience but it was just so much hassle doing simple things, InDesign wins hands down in my opinion. File updating and the integration with Photoshop is awesome, and the fact you can change layer visibility with Photoshop files right inside of InDesign saves so much hassle it's unreal.
Sample wise I don't do a whole lot of work with InDesign thats actually online, Ignition360.co.uk is the big InDesign thing I do really, more of a web design guy.
