This Film is Not Yet Rated

This Film is Not Yet Rated

This movie/documentary part of the Storyville segment of BBC4 has been talked about a lot on quite a few of the podcasts I listen too and looks like interesting viewing, I expect it will have a lot of parallels to how the BBFC was or still is constructed.
Tonight (March 1st) at 10.15pm BBC4.

Not for kids

Hi,

Yep, don't forget this is on tonight - March 1st, on BBC4. Oh, and the irony is, that this film was originally given an NC-17 certificate for cinemas in the USA! How hacked-off were the MPAA when they saw this film being submitted for ratings purposes?! Very!

Re: This Film is Not Yet Rated

It made our BBFC look like the epitome of openess and fairness

There are organisations that have to operate in secret but how anyone can say that film raters have to be included in that group while judges or social workers two groups who can generate pretty nasty enemies are wide open is beyond me.
I was gob-smacked to hear two Churches had representation and barring them the appeals lineup was blatently a commercially biased group who probably had good reasons to keep some content off their screens.
By the own statements in regards to the ratings procedure and appeals the very idea that it's a fair and balanced overview is just laughable and certainly the long held idea that killing is acceptable while sex isn't in the movies was re-enforced.

As for Valenti what a smug individual, it's refreshing that even in the US shows like Southpark and Simpsons exist to take the out of organisations such as these that use genuine concerns to influence free speech for commercial and political reasons.

Re: This Film is Not Yet Rated

I just don't get it...You can show someone being shot in the face in a PG-13 but you show a bit of skin and you get slapped with an NC-17. Now I'm not one for preaching about how films influence us but if they did what would you rather have us being influenced by...love or violence.

Also if this is a board run by parents....what kind of parents are happy to subject their kids to some of the levels of violence on the screen today. I just think that this documentary highlighted how stuck in the dark ages American really is....and I thought the BBFC were too strict. At least our classifiers actually look at a film and try to understand what the film maker was intending to do.

HI,

A fantastic documnetary, that - like Starburst says above - makes the BBFC look absolutely spotless when it comes to how films in the UK are rated/censored!

I cannot believe that the MPAA can act so callously towards film-makers. It seems that violence is okay for under-17's to see (or to see with parents) but the slightest hint of sex or nudity of any kind is an absolute end-of-the-world / kiss-of-death scenario for your film, and you'll automatically be given the NC-17, and thus you won't be allowed to promote your movie, or show it in almost any cinema in the USA.

Jack Valenti, and most of the MPAA board, all need to be ousted ASAP! All of them appear to be two-faced liars and decievers, who only have their own interests at heart, and not the publics. Hmmm, maybe we should introduce Jack Valenti and Co to Tony Blair and Co?! Maybe Valenti could get himself a nice little peerage, for a generous cash backhander to Labour?!

After watching this documentary, I can't say I could ever really complain about the US having better censorship rules than the UK. We may not be allowed to see everything uncut, here in the UK, but at least we are treated like adults in cinemas, 99% of the time, by the BBFC.

Pooch

P.S. Bet Kirby Dick ain't going to be on any of the MPAA staff-members Christmas card lists! And how nice to see that his movie got awarded an NC-17 for "occasional explicit sexual material"! Talk about rubbing salt into the wound! Sheesh!

I think you're getting a bit carried away there. The MPAA is obviously riven with hypocrisy, but I think our own jolly ol' BBFC gives it a good run for it's money, and in no way can be condoned or supported.

I thought it was crap TBH and I thought the most immoral thing about it was the way those bizarre lesbian PI's were allowed to thoroughly invade the privacy of people just doing their job.

Censorship is for the 'masses' - if you post on here then its likely it doesnt really affect you (R1's etc) so who cares???

Looked like pretty normal PI work to me, perhaps if it was a hard drinking, hard hitting macho ex-cop then that would have been better.
