After doing a system update I have been asked to reboot.

On rebooting I get a blue screen with a timer, this has been there for about four hours now ( don't worry I'm not sat there waiting ).

Obviously something has gone wrong.

Is this normal and what is the best way to recover from this situation. Should I just pull the plug.

I am completeley new to the mac world and have no knowledge ( yet ) of how to use them whatsoever, so please be gentle,

Thanks.

hold down the power button on the back and see if it restarts... if not just unplug it and try a restart. One of our intels failed to reboot after an update but a forced restart cured things.

Do you happen to know which updates were downloaded?

It was a completeley new out of the box imac.

It looked like all applications were being updated, 12 in total.

Downloads I remember were itunes, imovie, idvd and os.

really good place to start: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/intel/

there are loads of reset key combinations that you can try

here's a section on I'm having trouble starting up my iMac (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303138)

and finally I see a blank blue screen when I try to start up my computer (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2235.html) - that sounds like you ;)

Mine did this about a year ago when i did an OS update and it froze on the blue screen but after about 20 mins it restarted itself(i didn't touch anything) and it loaded up fine.

So i think a restart like suggested above will be fine.

If it's new out of the box then there is a firmware update for the intel machines which will more than likely be downloaded. These need the machine to be restarted in a special way for them to be applied.

With the machine powered off, press and hold the power button. The power light on the front will start to blink, once it does release the power button. You should then see the update installing, it does take a couple of minutes. Once it's finished I think it reboots itself, this may solve your issue?

Ahh, now that makes sense. There should also be a large beep.

Just for reference when i get mine, do you go on the mac and download the updates before restarting and getting the blue screen or do you do what you just said before you even use the Mac?

no, you'll have to boot it up and get it running first, then click the blue apple, then update and it will then start the software updater.

the new firmware update instructions are also posting on screen before you run it

just got home and rebooted using the 2 second wait method as detailed above.

Firmware updated and its running again.

Thanks to all.

I'm now having some issues with the parallels software but I'll start another thread......it must just be me !
