Your current hardware, intel or ppc, desktop or laptop...

Just to guage what the core users here are running.

I use the following...

Home is my maxxed out desktop system...

Desktop - Imac 24"

Processor - 2.33GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory - 2GB 667 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM

HD - 500GB

Video - NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT

I'm a DJ by trade and use the following for work...

Laptop - Power PC G4 - 17"

Processor - 1.67 GHZ PowerPC

Memory - 2GB FFR2 SDRAM

HD - 120GB

I use this system purely with Serato Scratch that enables me to use timecoded CD's to replay music from my HD as if it were just a regular CD. Best move I ever made was from CD to PC

I'm about to buy a macbook to replace the G4 laptop, but the G4 has given me absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Re: Your current hardware, intel or ppc, desktop or laptop...

At home I use a dual 1.8 G5, 3.5gb ram, 160 & 300gb hard drives (and another 2x 250GB & 500GB external), 9600XT and a 20" cinema display. Also have a 12" G4 powerbook for sofa surfing.

At work I use a 20" imac, 2.1ghz G5 with 1.5gb of ram. Have an intel core 2 duo one sat here too but it doesn't get used.

Re: Your current hardware, intel or ppc, desktop or laptop...

I have a MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo. It has 2.16ghz processor, 2gb RAM and 160gb harddrive. Also got a 500gb western digital my book pro external harddrive. I pretty much use my MacBook Pro everywhere, either putting it on my desk to do work, or just lie in bed or on the sofa, and when i need to, just connect to my LCD when I want to watch something.

Re: Your current hardware, intel or ppc, desktop or laptop...

Home
PowerMac Dual-Core 2.3Ghz G5
4Gb RAM
1.5Tb HDD
HP 2335 23" LCD

Road
15" MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz
2Gb RAM
100Gb HDD

15" PowerBook 1.25Ghz
2Gb RAM
80Gb HDD - yeap still need it

Work
MacPro Two 2.66Ghz Dual Core Xeon (yet to arrive )
2GB RAM (will update to 8Gb),
ATI Radeon X1900XT,
2Tb
still deciding on a display (or two), perhaps the Apple 23" Cinema Display
+ studio machines which i'll not get into

I've a major storage issue, in terms of size and because it's not easily accessible to these machines. I have purchased an PCIe eSATA RAID card, to which i can attach 10 hard drives, still if this stays at work I can't have access to my projects at home.

How do you find the 20'' imac to work with? It's what i plan to get in a couple of weeks but with 2.33GHZ Processor and 2GB Ram. Does the one you work with cope with everything OK?

It does the job - but it can grind to a halt. Was recently working on a lot of tiffs from a photo shoot (60-90mb each) and it did slow down quite a bit. We have about 10 of them in our studio and it's only really our video guy who sometimes wishes he had something a little more powerful. But for the majority of stuff I do it's more than adequate. Will probably get one for home at some point.

I used to have one of these as a temp, I found it a bit noisy at times, any probs with yours?

Have you got your hands on Lightroom yet tomson? A few of our guys love it compared to Aperture.

Re: Your current hardware, intel or ppc, desktop or laptop...

all ours are deadly quiet to be honest.

Tried the lightroom beta when it first surfaced - didn't use it that much but it did seem like a really nice tool - lovely interface. Might take another look at it soon - as I noticed an email from Adobe with an introductory price, but will have to see. I use aperture at home but only for laying out photo books so don't use it to it's full potential - I went to a Canon/Apple seminar a while back and they were really showing it off, some great features which i've never touched on. But for now I'm happy with photoshop/bridge combo - i know it inside out so it never throws up any surprises.

Re: Your current hardware, intel or ppc, desktop or laptop...

First time on here in ages...lost a bit of interest in the whole home cinema equipment bit - just wanted to enjoy films without lusting after the latest kit. Anyway long time Mac user going right back to Mac Classic - now have 2 powerbook G4's and a shiny new 20" imac core2duo with 2gigs ram.

Imac is plenty enough for the family computer for at least 3 / 4 years.
