No Prologic II Surround on 2ch dolby digital

I'm using a Denon 2802 receiver connected to a samsung 860 DVD player via coaxial and various other 2 channel stereo sources -- ie freeview and a VCR.

The problem occurs when playing a DVD with a 2 channel dolby digital stereo source -- sound is only output via the centre channel and subwoofer. The amp converts bog standard stereo sources from freeview into surround, but struggles on DVD.

I've been through the Denon manual, checking levels etc. Any thoughts/suggestions on how to get surround out of two channel dolby stereo.

Thanks

In the audio setup on the player, are the "digital out" and "Mpeg-2 digital out" both set to "bitstream"?
I believe they need to be.

One other thing comes to mind.
With the Denon (certainly my 3803), there is an option for an "auto" setting.
You need to make sure that is enabled.

Just thought;
Are you in PL11 mode?

Re: No Prologic II Surround on 2ch dolby digital

I presumme you have the DVD connected via optical or coaxial?

I'm not sure about the Denon, but on mine I can just manually select how I want to decode the signal. You change it from Auto to: Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, Neo 6, etc.... Can't you just do that on the Denon? (Sorry if thats no help)
