poor sound from stb

hi i have a standard stb connected to a panasonic 37px60 via scart, the stb is an explorer 4200 and when watching any channel the sound is low and poor you have to turn the volume up higher than that of the built in freeview which is excellent sound wise. the scart is not standard it is gold plated.
also i have a pioneer xv-dv313 and have tried connecting a audio/video cable to the stb but the only surround sound i can get is that of the inbuit freeview i am not sure what im doing wrong. can anybody help me setup this better or have any other ideas. if this is in the wrong forum sorry and can you redirect me please, thanks in advance.

If you push the Home button on the remote, select Settings and Services, and then Display and Audio, you should see an option to "Adjust Volume". Crank it up to 9 or 10 and see if that helps.
