Didn't really know where to post this so I'll try it here, is the pq quality better on cable or sky?

I have just had cable installed and still have the sky+ box installed, so I am able to do a direct comparison between the 2. The cable is markedly better than the Sky, some channels better than others. My son is watching Ghostbusters 2 know on SKY one (through cable) as I'm typing this. The picture is very crisp and the colours much brighter on the cable feed.It really is very good. I have a Sharp 42'' 1080p screen. The cable is connected by HDMI and the Sky through RGB scart.

Thats not a fair comparison if your cable box is connected thru hdmi and sky only through rgb scart :thumbsdow

And why does that make a difference when both pictures are SD ? Can you explain ?

Well I suppose if you want to do a fair comparison you would need to compare standard SKY to standard Cable box.
If you are comparing V+ to normal SKY then the PQ is *much* better through Cable. Have never seen SKY HD so cannot comment.

Because (assuming the display has HDMI input), there will be two less stages of data conversion using HDMI whereas using RGB requires digital to analogue conversion in the STB and A to D conversion in the display unit ; there will be some linearity errors and quantisation noise produced by those coonversion processes.
