Where to apply +10db to LFE?

Hi,

After much help from this forum I hooked my DVD-2930 up to my AVR-2307 via the 5.1 analogue output for DVD-Audio play back. I believe I'm right in saying that it is recommended to apply a +10db boost to the LFE channel in this case. This can be done on either the DVD-2930 or the AVR-2307 via the EXT. In configuration. My question is, assuming I'll use my ears to decide, where would people on this forum recommend enabling this level boost, the DVD or AVR?

Thanks a lot.

Don't think it really matters at the end of the day. I'd be inclined to use the player. That's just my personal choice though.

Cheers Jase. Any particular reasoning? I'd be interested in any musings.

Just working on the basis the player is doing the decoding so it might as well apply the 10db LFE boost at the same time.

Re: Where to apply +10db to LFE?

Amp Option #3 Audio Input Set Up, then EXT IN Subwoofr level, up to +15db

I found with my 2900 player that to set the sub to be + 10 above the other channels I had to change all the channels to -10db. Then I found I could not set the right levels between speakers as there was no "headroom" in the channel settings to do that. I found the amp setting to be the most flexible.

Re: Where to apply +10db?

Yea, that's the AVR option I was referring to. On the 2930 at least, it has a specific LFE +10db option, I'm pretty sure. Must be a new feature.

Cheers.

Re: Where to apply +10db?

Ah, right, I see.

When playing a DD or DTS source (not via EXT IN as I believe EXT IN bypasses all bass management and hence the need to set levels on the DVD), press the SURROUND PARAMETER on your handset and then you have an option to CUT the LFE by 10db mostly used for DTS music.. See page 28 in the manual.

Not sure if this is what you thought it was?

Re: Where to apply +10db?

Yea, that's something different, I saw your previous posts about DTS music and the -10db, I've not tried any of that, would be using the 2 channel analogue input for that, I presume?

P.S. You're right, the EXT In. bypasses all bass management, which is why I have to use the 2930's bass management for DVD-Audio/SACD, thanks to Jase for explaining it all to me on a previous thread.

P.P.S. I use Coax Digital for DD/DTS 5.1 tracks from movies.

Re: Where to apply +10db?

TBH I find the 2900 a bit more adept at decoding DTS Music than the 3805, and although I have 2 channel interconnects as well as the 5.1 interconnects on EXT-IN, I find that the bass management of the 2900 better. In some instances also better for movies! So with A-B-C comparisons (EXT-In, 2 channel Analogue, Digital Coax) I find my personal preference to be the EXT-In route for DTS Music. I get a much wider soundfield and much warmer than the Digital Coax. TBH there is not a lot in it with the analogue, but that would preclude playing multi-channel DTS or DVD-A. Like Ian J said in another thread about matching speakers, once you hear Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in multi channel format, then its hard to go back to "normal" material!
