3805 vs 3806

Hi

I currently have a Denon 3805 and wondering whether to trade in for a 3806 in order to be able to use the biamp feature (which sounds good on 3805 but with hum) and try out the multeq. Anyone able to comment on the two amps? is it a worthwhile upgrade?

Cheers
Matt

How much do you figure that will cost you?

You might need to find more than you expect.

Re: 3805 vs 3806

I was thinking a 2nd hand 3806 would go for ~£525 (say +/- £50)...... I don't think I'd paid more than that tbh

Re: 3805 vs 3806

With 3805's currently going for around £400, the current model is likely to be the best part of £200 more (not an exact science!). Then if you factor delivery at c£25, it would prove to be an expensive upgrade. It may actually be better to shoot higher, maybe an Arcam AVR300 if you crave a quality increase.

That's my point of view anyway.

Re: 3805 vs 3806

I based my price on the few that had gone via the classifieds which have tended to be around the £500-525 mark. tbh I wouldn't pay a £200 premium over my current model and my budget definitely doesn't stretch as far as an AVR300 (unfortunately).

Re: 3805 vs 3806

Another option might be to purchase a separate power amp to bi-amp the fronts. That's what I am looking at, but there is not much advice out there, so it's tricky. You could actually get a better sound as the power amp is likely to be of better quality (if you buy well).

do you think it sounds better aside from the EQ?

you won't but someone might! Things can go for weird prices on ebay, there is a 3806 on there that is already (with a day to go) upto £600 inc for example yet I wouldn't be surprised to see another go cheaply. Often it just needs a lucky coincidence of one that is collection only and nearby, obviously that requires patience and getting lucky but I can live in hope. Ultimately I like the sound of my 3805 so not in any hurry right now

Re: 3805 vs 3806

the eq flexability is brill and is the main difference imho.
i wish you the very best in your quest and anyway the 3805 is still a stonking bit of kit
