Hi
I currently have Broadband and Phone with VM and Sky+ for TV. Just an hour ago I rang up Virgin Media asking about the possibility of them losing Sky1 (can't be without this). I was basically guaranteed that they wouldn't lose it and was quoted a total monthly price for a 3 package deal (Brodband, Phone and TV:XL).. I'll be saving over £400 a year so I went ahead and booked an installation for next Wednesday..
I'm just a little concerned about this Sky1 business... What 'if' they lose it? I've heard of the LEGAL VOD internet services, if I could find one of these that has all the good stuff like Lost, Stargate, Battlestar etc. I'd feel better, but I can't find any.
Reading posts on here it seems a lot of people are booking installations this month which makes me feel a little better but I just wonder if I should maybe wait.. How long is the period before I'm committed to VM? 7 days?
I think I'll ring up sky now to cancel.. Maybe they'll offer a good deal and I can cancel the Virgin Media installation...

I think you have a 30 day cancellation period. I really don't think tthey will lose the sky channels, it's in neither of their interests.
What was your monthly price, If you don't mind me asking:god:

I currently pay (a month)
£46 for phone and 10MB broadband
£34 Sky
£10 Sky Protection plan
---------------------
If I went with Virgin it would cost £61 a month for 10MB broadband, phone and TV:XL. HD would be included although VM only has BBC:HD right now...And some say this will be the case for a long while to come(?) I'd save another £10 on the protection plan since if the VM box dies, they just replace it.
It was either this or I could go with Sky and take their Broadband service. That would also save me a chunk of money..
Decisions, decisions :/

Hi jon
There are also HD movies available on demand, Thats a pretty good price by the way.
Personally I would move to virging (already booked my installation), as when I phoned sky both 6 months ago they were unwilling to offer any discounts on SKY+ and the same a few days ago they also seemed somewhat in denial about the deal I said I could get with virging :suicide: .

Although I have it booked for next week.. I'm still on the fence..
A couple of things.. There is this business with 'possibly' losing key channels (Sky1) although it's believed this is very unlikely..
Also I was told by a Sky rep (taken with a pinch of salt, but still gets you thinking) that you can't record HD material.. Whether this is just movies on demand or the HD channels (BBC right now) I don't know...
The other thing she said is that Virgin Media will NOT be getting any HD channels ..That is why they are giving away the HD compatible set-top box, because they won't be getting any HD content.
HD isn't 'that' important to me right now, but I don't want to wait much longer for more HD channels (Sky1 HD is all I want).
I'm sure she was talking BS, but the general feeling here is that HD content is quite a long way off (TV channels).
Any thoughts?

Don't listen to anything sky tell you, you can record HD, I have seen it discussed in threads on this forum.
Virgin have just signed a deal with HBO for their Video on demand service which is free to XL tv customers. There is said to be HD content included in this deal too. As for VM not getting any HD channels in the future :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:, sorry that just smacks of desperation from sky.
Incidentally my brother spoke to VM earlier and mentioned the SKY 1 business, The guy from VM told him that about ten minutes before he phoned everybody received a memo stating that they would NOT be losing any sky channels.

Just to clarify, You can record the BBC HD channel (have done it myself many times), but not the Pay per view HD movies. I assume we will be able to record any other 'normal' HD channels they may add. That is the big question as to when other HD channels will be added. I'm an optomist on that front but Virgin media do seem to be going down the Video on demand route ---- most of it being free for people on the XL TV package. there is already a a reasonable amount of BBC HD content and the links below are to recent anouncements about content coming very soon.
