For all of us with terrabytes of hd stuff on the hard drive and a PC capable of decoding H264, the Toshiba SD-H903A will be a boon. Looks like this will write on to HD DVD discs- is this correct? And will this play HD DVDs if it is a bare drive?

It is a very slow drive for reading/writing standard DVD's...
Alternatively, just spotted this Blu-Ray rewriter, though at £435 it ain't particularly cheap. It is in stock though! No idea where you get blank discs from or how much though, maybe they're somewhere on eBuyer as well.

Get an Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive, they work on the PC via USB2, just need the UDF 2.5 Drivers and Power DVD Ultra

why not get a blu-ray writer?, as I said before the HD Writers are useless if your using it as your primary optical drive as they are way to slow reading/writing normal cd's/dvd's, the blu ray drive is much faster..., so better going for that...

It will be interesting what price the hd dvd writer will sell at. As far as normal DVD/CD is concerened, most people will probably have another drive, to read those! Personally, which one I choose depends on the price.
