Why does the Skype connection keep breaking up?

Unsure if there is an easy answer to this question, but perhaps some of the Voip/computer experts out there may be able to theorise.

I currently use Skype - Skype to call the g/f.

At my end I have a Linksys CIT200 cordless phone.
She runs Skype through her laptop on a shared wireless network within a rented house (2 other people share the network).

Now when we call there is no problem - that is until a certain point in every call.

It is usually around 2min 40secs into the call. Something happens to the connection and all I get is static. I hang up and we would call each other again. And usually it continues like this !!

Now about 5% of the time it can happen after the 2:40 (sometimes I have had 5min or 7min calls) and sometimes before (some calls < 1min).

But when I get the static and hang up, the call suration I see on screen 90% of the time is between 2:30 - 2:50, and 2:47 is seen quite often !!

What could be causing this? The fact that it seems to keep happening around a fixed time of call is baffling.

Any thoughts appreciated.

See if you (or she) can access the log from the router used for her shared WLAN as it may provide a clue; someone would need to access the router via an ethernet connection and login to it with the admin password to do this (default password may well be "admin" - check router manual for details and IP address needed to login to it.

Re: Why does the Skype connection keep breaking up?

I had a similar problem recently. A friend suggested I go to www.portforward.com (The same friend that suggested I register at AV Forums!) and open the ports used for VOIP. The Website is really useful and will tell outline the entire process for you. All you have to do is click on the port forwarding link near the top of the page, then select which router you are using, and then select Skype.
Once the ports were forwarded Skype gave me no problems at all.

Not something silly like a screen-saver kicking in & absorbing processing power?
