View Full Version : Why isn't there a seperate Mac forum?

I am just wondering why there isn't a seperate forum for Mac owners yet on the Forum?

Could we have one please? There are after all more and more people these days getting a Mc computer like me

Agreed, there's plenty of scope for discussion, especially after the recent transition to Intel processors.

I would agree, I jumped ship from Windows land to a 24" Imac just before crimbo and I'm sure i'm not the only one.

Who's the person who can add the forum? I'll PM them to ask. Is it Stuart Wright?

Agreed that would be good but maybe the forum could be on all things Apple not just the computers.

Damn it'll be quiet in there!;)
I would argue that the reason is because Macs have not featured greatly in the 'entertainment pc' market which is where we concentrate. Also to put it bluntly, they work! 90% of the traffic we get here is about stuff not working. However Stuart is your man. Put the question to him and see what he says.:)

lol - true about Macs 'just working'

But now they are becoming more popular as a media centre. And there are always tips to share.

I'm in favour too, I'm in two minds to get the mini for media solution or just hang on a for windows based solutions to fall in price a little.

I don't have a Mac. mate of mine is a professional editor. he shoots hi-def and edits it on the mac. Piece of cake. playback not an issue - I have seen him at work on it and it eats the stuff. high end mac though - didn't ask him the cost.
He plugged the mac together, installed some high end editing/production suite and was away at it. Impressive.

OK OK, I admit it,

I'm a switcher too!

I'd love a mac section for those of us who 'think different'

I've got a Mac Mini and I just can't believe how great it is!

I've sent Stuart Wright a PM asking for a Mac forum with a link to this thread. I hope he does make one as it can be hard to find Mac stuff on the forum with thousands of threads reagrding PC's

Although most of the time Mac's just work, there's still plenty of things which take some figuring out. Especially those that want to use frontrow as a media centre interface. Plus with the AppleTV landing in a living room near you there's bound to be even more interest from PC users and Mac users alike.

I've had to scratch my head a few times trying to do things like adding downloaded avi's to iTunes, getting dolby digital 5.1 sound out of downloaded AVI's, reformatting external hard drives to HFS+.

Plus for those that are moving from PC to mac there's bound to be loads of questions regarding which software to use etc.

I'll certainly be found loitering if Stuart signs it off

I'll add another vote for a separate forum - not everything 'just works' on a mac. Try automounting a NFS share at boot - it's *nix, but not as you know it.

If the forum is Apple rather than Mac specific, with the popularity of iPods, increasing use of Macs and the forthcoming AppleTV, I think a separate forum is justified. Personally, a separate Mac forum is a good idea, but I reckon extending it to all Apple products will tip the balance.

Seriously thinking of getting a mac mini to act as a nifty downstairs entertainment & av centre so another plea for a mac forum here!

I to would prefer a seperate Apple Forum but with Ipods being disscussed in the MP3 player forum i doubt that would happen.

I've put a request to Stuart yesterday and hopefully i will get a response soon

I believe the Apple Forum would be too full of just iPod related stuff(they have their own forum for that), a Mac forum is what we all need, covering hardware (mac's / appleTV / etc) and software but with an UK/AV flavour

Could we not start a poll or vote on it? a few 1000 vote's might swing it!
What do you think Stuart?

Mac switcher since Nov'06, bought a Macbook in US, i was so impressed just took delivery of a 24' iMac last month....nice:devil:

A have both Mac and PC, the PC is a HTPC the reason is the software for the mac isnt quite there.

If someone can tell me if they have an equivilent of Sage running on a Mac with a Dual PVR tuner then I would say that is the way to go.

gets my vote too! There have been plenty of times when ive had mac related issues and the IT guys at work don't know anything about macs so it would be useful just for work. I pop on mac rumors forum occasionally but its always nice to use a forum your used to!

Stuart's pretty good at replying to PM's. Give him another day or so, and perhaps one of the mod's could point him this direction too.

I'm wondering if there's a thread somewhere about the forum structure which may be worth a post to as well, I'll keep my eye's peeled.

The Mac Forum gets my vote, have put the wheels in motion to see what I can do. :smashin:

I would also like to keep the ipod away from the forum as it covers both or all three. pc, mac and linux and it falls perfect under the mp3 side of the forums.

Agreed, though the AppleTV is going to work with PC and Mac, not sure where that's going to find it's home.

I should think Stuart will be fairly busy leading up to the Bristol show now anyhow, maybe if we all buy him a drink we can get him drunk enough to agree to it :smashin:

It could also end up covering Linux and Unix. As the mac system is a bit of both I dont mind. But please use this (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=474479) to discuss the forum and what you would and what you dont want.

For me having A Mac / Linux / Unix would be fine.

Maybe there should be a forum for Linux and Solaris, with an Opensource non-proprietary hardware/software feel, and a separate forum for proprietary hardware/software systems, like Mac/OSX, Hewlett Packard HP-UX, etc

Linux users are generally Anti Microsoft for it’s proprietary software so I would guess Mac/OSX users would be even more disliked due the added proprietary hardware requirements in addition to what MS impose.

I knew you were joking i'm just giving you a taster of what the new forum will be like with my constant questions of what model should i get, what upgrade options should i choose, should i take apple care plan etc...

Also i would wait til leopard as it will cost you 80 quid more.(i'm saying that but i am using tiger on my mac mini just now so am on no hurry to upgrade my ailing windows laptop just yet.)

The problem is that we don't know when Leopard is being released. I keep hearing June as a date:eek:

I don't really want to wait. new imac specs might not be much better anyway as they only added the intel core 2 duo processors 6 months or so ago. I kow that they are apparently bringing out the imac in new colours:confused:

What's worse, i am being slightly tempted by the dark side and Windows Vista as it would be cool with my 360, hense why i need to buy the mac soon

C225
24-02-2007, 4:51 PM
Good chance it will be june as that is when the WWDC has been moved to and training sessions are being planned for that time aswell so its looking quite good.

Yes vista does look good and i have used it and it is quite good but i still like the mac much better.

BenchyUK
24-02-2007, 5:04 PM
June/July is along time to wait  I don't mind paying the £80 when it comes along if it means me getting a mac very soon. Apparently hardware changes to the imac are not happening until near end of the year, so that doesn't bother me

I heard that Leopard will work so well and easily on the current imacs anyway as the current OS has issues with the Intel processors. Having the 2GB Ram and 256mb graphics should be more than enough for me anyway as i am not playing games on it (360 does that) and no video editing. Just the simple computing stuff

Apparently you can buy applecare anytime within your 1 year warrenty aswell which is great news as iwant it but don't have the money for it when i get the mac :smashin:

C225
24-02-2007, 5:13 PM
If your happy paying the 80 quid in june/july then just get it now you wont be dissapointed i certainly wasnt 2 years back when i got my mini.

I'm the same as you not interested in gaming as i also have a 360 and a Wii and have all ways been more of a console gamer which is why the mac is great for me nice and stable and relativly virus free so hardly any hassel.

I'm a bit in two minds though about to get a macbook or an imac. It will be replacing a 3year old XP laptop and the laptop is handy for uni but i can get much higher specs in the imac and am trying to decide whether i actually have a real need for the laptop other than it can be handy sometimes.

screen is far too small for me on the macbook. 13.3'' is tiny. Although as nice as the 24'' imac is, the 20'' is what i am going for. More than enough for me. I only do web browsing, email and a little photo tweaking.

I've had enough of PC's. I always have bad luck with them:thumbsdow

I was going to get an ipod aswell but i am defiately going to wait for that as they are next releaing a touch screen one apparently with wifi earphones. Saying that i wouldn't mind an iphone

I was tempted by the 24" iMac, but when I actually went into the Apple store and looked at one, it just looked too big. I'm really happy with my 20" iMac, and all it's losing out on over the 24" is the graphics card, but as I'm only playing some older games through boot camp, this is no biggie.

A few sites are reporting a late March release. I can maybe see this happening, but realistically I think it will happen more April/May time.
