Toshiba: You Asked For It, You Got It (?)

Hello,

I’ve owned a Tosh SD900E for 1 year now, and saying I’m delighted with it would be a severe understatement. This player is truly superb.

I live in Portugal and bought it from www.hificomponents.de. This was a little bit risky, had I come up with any problems in the player, but it was a calculated risk, taking into account the much lower price when compared to the Portuguese list price at the time.

One thing I needed was a multi-zone conversion and it just happened that I made acquaintance with someone who was able to provide one, under the form of software upgrade.

Now, this person I mentioned is someone, …how shall I put it…very, very, VERY knowledgeable about Toshibas, here in Portugal. (if you catch my drift…).

As you can imagine, I’m potentially very interested in getting Progressive PAL from my player. So, this week, I gave this guy a call inquiring about this PalProg upgrade business and this were the facts discussed (I hope they are accurate):

1. Toshiba already have the ProgPal “ready to come out of the oven”. Only the lack of proper/legal standard certification is preventing it to see daylight.
2. Next year, some new players will, for sure, include this feature.
3. Retrofitting previous players will be perfectly feasible via software upgrade.
4. It is not guaranteed that such upgrade software will be available.

Discussing point 4 (and taking into account point 3), I came under the impression that people at Toshiba may think there is not a big demand for ProgPal from previous models owners.

It is very important that, once the standards are defined and implemented, we make them aware this requirement exists. I see, from other posts, that several people are already placing inquiries with Toshiba regarding this subject, which is nice. But I was thinking if this couldn’t be done in some kind of co-ordinated effort.

What about a petition as soon as the DVD Forum people come up with a standard for Progressive Pal?

You Brits could set it up! I, for one, would surely sign it up!

Thanks for that information. I also bought the SD900 at a bargain price and I'm very happy.

Some months ago I read a post from a guy in Germany who had a connection with Toshiba and had his SD510 modified to output PAL progressive. Unfortunately this was top secret and could not be made widely available.

Anyway, yes, I'd be most interested in a PALp mod for the SD900. Count me in.

Any chance of a link then please.

From a sad sd-510 owner with no prog pal.
