Freeview SD upscaling

How good is an upscaled freeview SD picture? Just read a review of the evesham iplayer and it said the upscaled picture was comaparible to sky Hd. I dont really understand how a Sd freeview picture can be upscaled to look better if it is not broadcasted in that res.

If this is the case, why not make freeview boxes that can upscale pcitures to 720p, 1080i/p to deal with the current channels. I have a tosh 32lwt66 and the picture looks better on that then on a 19 inch lcd tv with a sony dtx-v800 - is this due to it being upscaled or jsut because i sit closer to the 19inch (also my pc monitor)

I'm a noob with freeview, but i am quite interested in how this is done.

If you're watching a LCD or Plasma TV with more that 720x576 pixels, then you're already watching an upscaled picture. The TV is doing it. They all do.

Now, if the scaler in the source box is better than the one in the TV, you might see a benefit.....

The trial HD Freeview boxes had upscaling and it was no better than RGB from my Humax box.
