JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

i have recently installed this head unit: jvc-kdg821

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jvc-kdg821-p-4811.html

it plays fine etc.. but when i turn of the ignition and remove the fascia (as you do) and return. when i start the engine and play some music i find the unit has reset itself. so clock, display and sound settings are back to default. but it has retained the radio stations.

has anyone had/got a similar problem and is there a simple solution...(apart from hard wiring the power to the battery)

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

You've probably just got the permanent 12v and ignition 12v the wrong way round (some, although very few, head units will store radio stations in a memory)

Check you've actually got an ignition live too as the 206 changed to multiplex wiring (data) and the ignition supply was taken away

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

thanks,

but what you've said went over my head, i just plugged it in..
i know nowt about car electronics and stereo wiring.

also when i open the car door, the stereo comes comes on before i touch it or the ignition.

i'll check the manuals for the car and stereo see if i can see a diagram of the iso wiring.

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

INCORRECT WIRING. REMOVE PLUG NOW.......... DISCONNECT STEREO

tbh if you know nothing about fitting them why attempt it?

Take it to your local installers and pray you hav enot damaged it! have it installed by experts.

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

why?

i have been on the net, been into halfords (no other local installers), checked that i didn't need an ISO adapter for the unit, only an antenna adaptor and a faceplate(not really needed)

so it was just a matter of removing my old head unit, fitting the cage and plugging in the adaptor and ISO connectors.

would it be done any other way?

When you mention this ( above) what do you expect people to reply with.

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

I also have a similar problem with a jvc head unit installed in an old Fiat Punto. I know the constant and switched live are the wrong way round as the stereo resets itself as soon as the ignition is off. I,m not sure which one is which so if anyone knows what the common colours are and where they should go, then this will help both of us. If I was you Beecee then I would definately remove it if it comes on without touching anything.

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

Your cables are incorrectly connected.

Have you simply connected the two plugs. stereo i.s.o and your car loom?

btw.

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

yes, i took out the loom from the back of the original one, and connected it to the sockets of the new connectors in the loom (hard wired into the head unit) at the back of the new one. male to female connections.

that was that other than the antenna. there is a 3.5mm phono jack for use with the steering column controler, but not interested in that one.

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

I know the problem now you mention what happens when you open the doors.

The car has a multiplex system. Stereos always always used to have a 12v permanent supply and a 12v ignition switched supply. More cars nowadays are using data systems (van-bus / can-bus / multiplex, etc). This means that they don't need the 12v ignition switch anymore, the radio will receive a data packet telling it that the cars ignition is switched on. The wire that carries this data would show around 12v when the ignition switches on, so it is commonly mixed up with a proper ignition supply.

You've got 2 options;

1) Cut the wire for the ignition (pin3) and connect it to a proper 12v switched supply (maybe the cigarette lighter if this only works with the ignition on)

2) Get an interface for the steering wheel controls, this would read the multiplex data and create an ignition supply for you (as well as obviously making the steering controls work). This would be plug and play.

I hope that makes more sense.

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

thanks for your help guys. much appreciated.

the pic shows (from my hand book and the stereo) the 2 blocks that are to be connected.

so (on the stereo side) don't want to touch the car loom, can i just swap over the relevant points? (as shown)

or better of getting these cables:

Re: JVC head unit, Pug 206 and power problem!

Fixed mine dead easy. Swap the yellow and red around and hey presto. All memory retained and it works off the ignition.
