Samsung SP43 "Bloom" problem

Hi all,

I have had a Samsung SP43-L2HX LCD RPTV for about 3 years now and it has been fantastic.

It has recently developed a problem. There is a large patch (or Bloom) on the screen. It is situated centrally in the horizontal and about 2/3 of the way down in the vertical and is quite large. It takes up about a fifth of the screen.

Basically it is a vaguely square shaped (but rounded off and slightly trapezoidal) patch of yellowish colour tint. Detail is perfectly visible in it but everything is tinted yellow! It is most (very) noticeable on grey areas - IE: A black and white film. WIth a busy, bright, colourful picture it is not as noticeable.

Does anybody have any ideas please??

Many thanks,
Si.

Could it be dust on the lcd panels, how big is it the patch? You could try a can of compressed air to see if it shifts the problem.
Theres a few posts on the forums about yellow or blue patches on lcds, I have had a projector that developed the fault and it had to have the lcd panel replaced

Re: Samsung SP43 "Bloom" problem

Hi thekingbeyond,

It could be dust I guess? Could dust on the bulb be an issue? It is in quite a dusty evironment - Although I am from the UK I now live in Spain - quite a dusty country.

By the way, revision to my original post: The "patch" is not really square on close examination. It is ellipsoid but distorted. Hard to describe really. It is also more of a green colour rather than yellow.

Re: Samsung SP43 "Bloom" problem

I've a nasty feeling this is heat damage on the LCD assembly, caused by the lamp, perhaps not properly ventilated and/or not allowed to cool down after power off........or just poorly designed.

Re: Samsung SP43 "Bloom" problem

My guess would be panel burn but i would still take the back of and try a can of compressed air or get an engineer to have a look

Re: Samsung SP43 "Bloom" problem

Hi folks,

Hmmm.... Panel burn could be the problem. My mother came to stay with me over Xmas (amazing what living in Spain can do for your UK relatives holiday needs!!!!). Unfortunately she decided to turn the TV off at the power switch several times because "It uses electricity if you don't turn it off".

Doohhh... Can anyone calculate the cost of power to run a "Standby" LED
in proportion to replacing the LCD panel (or, indeed, the whole TV) !!

The TV originally cost about £1400 - How long could you run the set for on Standby for that amount of money???

Sounds like an obstruction in the light path and would require a service call.

Re: Samsung SP43 "Bloom" problem

Hi SamsungTech. I live in Spain now (the TV was purchased in the UK). It is not possible for me to book a service call. Is there anything I can do to correct this? Many Thanks, Si.

Re: Samsung SP43 "Bloom" problem

Weird!!! I have just moved house and the effect seems to have gone! For the first few days it was there but less noticeable and now it seems to have gone altogether. The only differences are as follows :

1. It has been moved in a truck
2. Our seating position is quite a bit lower than the last house
3. We are much nearer the screen
4. The screen is now in shade as opposed to having direct sunlight on it all day (as in the last house)

Not that I am complaining :-) but any ideas anyone?
