HD on freeview

Hiya I'm getting a new HDTV on Sunday which has iDTV and I was wondering that when Football is on BBC1 will is show up in HD on my tele seeing as the freeview is built into the TV?

I'm confused by it you see and I read you need a Sky box to watch HD channels but surely if it's built into the TV then I would be able to receive BBC in HD?

Re: HD on freeview

High Definition has never technically been broadcast on Freeview.
The DTT HD trial in London used some spare capacity and a different codec (requiring a totally different STB) to offer HD to a very limited audience and closed down recently. The BBC trial is now only on satellite and cable.
Why the channel markers appeared on Freeview boxes/televisions that could never receive the signal is beyond me and probably confused many people.

A HD Ready display or any display with a DTT tuner can not currently receive HD broadcasts and long term any HD over the air will not use the codec the current boxes or TV's support so the only way to watch broadcast HD is via a satellite or cable HD box.

Perhaps in 2012 when analogue is gone a genuine DTT HD service will begin and TV's with suitable tuners incorporated will appear but more likely a seperate set top box will still be the norm.
