According to this article (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/business/news/e3ica23d1ee9d4a1835f97002a2524dddc3) the upcoming HD DVD release of Star Trek: The Original Series complete with new special effects will be released on a combi disc - namely DVD/HD DVD.
Excellent news IMHO - not only will this encourage HD DVD adoption but will ensure people don't have to 'double dip' in that that they are getting next gen versions as well as the DVD variant

It also means a premium price for anyone who wants just DVD or just HD-DVD but cheaper for the distributor thanks to a single product to market.

Possibly. Paramount haven't ventured into combi discs yet so we aren't aware of their planned pricing - however, at their keynote speech at CES, other studios implied they planned alot more DVD/HD DVD combi releases in 2007. So maybe the price of producing such discs is now reducing?

I've no idea how the manufacturing process effects costs but I can clearly see benefits in promoting a single product for a combined market as opposed to two seperate products for the same market.
I would still suspect that a few dollars per disk (and $$$ for a boxset) would still be slapped on regardless since I can't see them not pushing the benefit of dual format for a little extra just as they have for the combo stuff now:)
I am very interested in finally owning TOS in a HD digital format (remastered visuals is a bonus) but paying extra for a combo gives me pause.

I don't care how good they look, there's no way I'm buying these again :)
I got stung first time around when they were releasing them two eps to a disc, then I bought the season box sets. They look fantastic as they are now, good enough for me anyhow.

I had them on VHS many many moons ago but never bought the DVD's, Trek in all forms has been vastly overpriced and now with prices falling I have no interest because I want the HD version:)

 I don't remember the series being released on individual DVDs? Are you talking about the VHS releases? As far as I remember all Star Trek series were released in boxsets on DVD: TNG, DS9, Voyager, TOS, Enterprise (the latter two may have been the other way around). I always thought (and still do) that the boxsets represented excellent value - £80-odd for the DVD set versus £143 (£11 x 13 tapes) on VHS.

They were released individually at 2 episodes per DVD in R1. They then got them in boxsets the same as R2.
I agree even at £60 they are less than half the price of what I paid for the VHS versions. I paid £12.99 x 13 for DS9 and Voyager seasons. Then do that over 7 years. I paid £20 for Voyager season 6 from CD Wow on DVD which I think it a really amazing price. Now, TNG can be bought for as low as £15 is  ;. Expect DS9 to be cheaper this year like TNG with Voyager next year.

They were offered as double episode sets on R1 not sure about R2.

Oh I see. I must have missed that - glad I did as the boxsets are/were superb IMHO.

Lucky you did miss them, they weren't cheap either, standard DVD price as I recall, didn't get anywhere near even half back what I paid for them when I eBayed them to get the boxsets :(

If they start releasing everything on Double Sided Discs (Combo) without the option for Single Sided Versions (HD-DVD Only) I am ******* boycotting buying these films and download them.
In this day of technological level Double Sided Discs are something that is unacceptable to me and IMHO is gonna end up p****** a lot of people off.
Thats my personal opinion from use of the treat like a dirty bomb Double Sided Discs (Starship Troopers).

Why? I think they are a great idea personally - things like Star Trek I am quite likely to watch on my laptop or whilst away from my home cinema so DVD compatibility is ideal. Whilst flippers aren't the prettiest things in the world, I've never had any problems with them. Indeed my R1 Starship Troopers 'flipper' (movie on one side, extras where on the other) is still in perfect working order.
Another point is that it will save those of us who haven't yet jumped on the HD bandwagon from buying a HD release in the future.

There is currently a premium charged for combo discs and I object paying for a DVD version I have zero interest in, it's that simple.
It may only end up being around a tenner a boxset but Trek is expensive enough when they are first offered and HD-DVD is going jack the price up and combo will add even more.
If you can use both formats then perhaps any premium could be acceptable but it's pure manipulation designed to make extra money and/or promote a newish format that most will never use.
Flippers as such are evil, more tricky to handle and simply not as asthetically pleasing without the cover art plus you know in this day and age on DVD it's a money saving idea. As to the long term viability of HD-DVD/DVD flippers who knows, we thought laserdisc was fine until the rot set in:)
The price may simply be the deciding factor on if I purchase, if I feel I am being exploited (as with all other Trek DVD releases) then I won't buy.

These need to be priced at a normal price - charging and additional amount for having two formats just isn't a popular option - it's not as if you can use both at the same time.
The advantage of both however would be if you upgrade your equipment to use the new version - means you can buy it now rather than hang off buying them.
But then Trek has always been priced at a premium when it comes out - no reason to think this will be any different.

My Starship Troopers film is split in half, First half on one side then it comes up "Please Turn Disc Over" or something like that.
Really annoyed me when they released a single sided version man was I ******.
There is only one thing I cannot tolerate when buying anything on a CD/DVD and thats when its got two sides.
If they start giving people the option of only buying the combo's then I think no matter what they bring out thier sales are going to go down because of the way you have to treat them (See my previous post :) ).
I have no problem if they want to release combo's with a HD-DVD on one side of the case and the standard DVD on the other (No need for manuals so this should be fine) and since HD-DVD Films are pretty much the same price as DVD films I dont care if they add a few quid on the price.
But I will not buy anything thats on a double sided disc I mean I have hundreds of DVD comprised of PC Games, Xbox (1+260) Games, Films, TV Series, PS2 Games, PS1 Games and not one of them has many scratches for the years I have had them, but I know as soon as I start getting Double Sided discs its gonna get nuked because in some of the cases I have to press on one side of the disc so I can grip the other side of it to pick it up and I wont be able to do that with the double sided discs.
Not to mention getting them in and out of the DVD Player I would eventually use.
Double Sided Discs FTL :thumbsdow
PS
Man I like typing without having to use that Click n Type program like I did with my last post :suicide: took ages lol

Yeah I remember seeing a few of these myself - personally I avoided them where I could and went for R1 editions where they were all on one side.

They will never do that - you could sell one version and their sales could be halved.

aesthetically pleasing? does how the disc itself look actually matter?

Yes.
Disc art is part of the whole package, yes I can understand why someone wouldn't consider it important especially if there were some saving in it for them but disc art, box style and cover art all play a part.
That said I dislike double sided media enough that I would still be happy with a white surface with side a in marker on it and I am delighted that of my collection probably only a dozen items are flippers.

EXACTLY
Personally I dont care about disc art because I never overly stare at it but I dont want to be hassled with having to treat the disc like 50 year old dynamite that could go off at any second.

Isn't anybody a bit concerned that they are going to digitally "enhance" each episode? From what I've managed to find out it appears that one of the things they're going to do is replace all the external shots of the the Enterprise with CGI... seems quite ambitious to me and if it isn't handled well it could ruin the feel of the show?

Nope since they said no storyline or situation would be altered thanks to improving the optical and painted matts used in the show and judging from the US screenings they have been true to their word.
Given the move to HD (from 35mm masters) then improving 1960's visual effects was a must and so very easy in this day and age:)

Sounds like 'Red Dwarf remastered'

I think you may be in a minority here which means you will not affect their decision to make double sided discs. The billions (trillions?) of records, cassettes, dvds etc that have been double sided show that flipping is a neccessary evil to get twice as much info on the format.

I find shoving my index finger into the centre hole and pulling the disc up, then touching the sides with thumb and middle finger to place into the box never means touching either top of the bottom of the disc.

I do this too, not had any problems yet. i would want the flex offered by having a dvd disc rather than pretty disc art i would never see.
