Odd Sky+ connectivity problem

Bit strange this one - but I get the 'No Satellite Signal being Recieved" frequently - but only when the f-type plugs are used to connect to the box. If I leave the cables bare, and put the core into the socket, and wrap the copper strands around the screw threads - I don't get ANY problems at all... Put the plugs back on the ends, and it'll work for 5 minutes, then I get picture breakup, and eventual message as above...

This has happened on 2 boxes too - so I know its not the sockets...

Obviously it used to be 100% fine, but has got progressively worse over time, and now it never runs for more than a couple of hours with the f plugs before the message...

I'm handy enough with tools to do the following procedure - except for the diagonal cut at the end of the core - it can't be that surely?

Any ideas?

Re: Odd Sky+ connectivity problem

Its quite easy to get a single loose strand of the outer shield shorting across to the centre conductor.Make sure the small length of bare insulation is absolutely clear of 'whiskers' then check again (twice). Fold all outer strands back over the cable tightly so that screwing the connector on wont push any onto the centre core.
I guess another possibility is crud on the insulation or socket (blood where the stanley knife slipped?).I find the best cleaner is IPA (pronounced iso propile alcohol-but not spelt like that!!!) I'm told a good substitute is neat gin but what a waste!

Or you just could buy one of our professional coax strippers and a couple of new 'F' connectors! Looking at about £10 or so.

Cheers, Franc
