Help connecting an S-Video Socket, please help.

Hi, I've purchased a Keene S-Video & Socket Quick connect as I am trying to fit it high towards the ceiling so I can connect my projector, out of the way to it. Only thing is, I am not sure about how to wire it. I know it's a quick connect system and a wired system, but its going to be too tricky and tight to install it like that, much better wiring it in I think.

The connections I can see are "Y" on one side and "C" on the other. then I think it's Earth either side of those?

I've got an Svideo cable on order which I will cut the plug off when it comes.

There's a diagram at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-video#Connector_2 that shows the pin assignments. Hope this helps.

looks like the diagram will tell me what pin does what. I guess though when I cut the svideo cable, the cables I am hoping will be obvious as to which they are? or are they colour coded to you think?

ok, I've got my Svideo and it's cut now and all that is in there are two wires, red and white? see:

You might be able to unscrew the connector on the other end of the cable to see which cable goes to Y and which to C (ref the wikipedia link above).

strip the sheath of original connector you cut off (assuming you cut a factory lead) and see what pins the wires are connected to

it won't screw off at all, I've tried. oh well, a bit of trial and error I guess.

if you wire them the wrong way you should get is a B&W image

Each of the red and white wires should be a co-axial, i.e. you need to strip each further until you have the centre core and the screen.

If you have access to a test meter, "buzz out" the cable to find out which centre core is connected to pin 3 - luminance.

Connect that to the Y terminal. Connect its screen to the earth next to it.

Connect the other centre core to the C terminal. Connect its screen to the earth next to C.

In the absence of a test meter, I would guess that white is Y and red is C. Or as Scott suggests cut the plug open.

If that doesn't work, swap them round.

You're unlikely to get a B & W image if they're the wrong way round as there are no syncs on the chroma (you might get some sort of image). You would get B & W if the luminance was connected correctly but the chrominance wasn't.
