dvd video aspect ratiosq

Hi,

Can someone point me to a site where they clearly show the different video ratios on dvd films, as alot of the R4 sites have ratios i am not sure about.

You can check the specs for R4 DVDs using www.michaeldvd.com.au

If you want to check the original aspect ratios for movies, use www.imdb.com (look for technical specs on the left when the movie's details come up).

Hi,

Yeah, I was not looking for ratios on films as such, more to what the differences were between the numbers, maybe in a illustration/picture format of screen sizes.


ie, 1.85:1, 1:78:1, 1.66:1, 4:3, etc, etc,

...interestingly, the 'aspect ratio' of a 'standard' TV (4:3 = 1.33:1)

It's the same principle as the ratios you would have done in maths at school.

The larger the number that isn't "1", the wider the picture will be, so the more horizontal black bars are needed, e.g. 2.35:1 is wider than 1.85:1.

If you want to see the shapes, just draw it out. So for 2.35:1 just draw a rectangle whose top and bottom measure 2.35cm each, and whose left and right sides measure 1cm each. Do the same for the other ratios. (You can also draw them bigger by just multiplying by the same number on each side, so for example 2.35:1 = 4.70:2 = 7.05:3 .... )
