200gb Blu Ray Discs!

TDK unveils 200GB Blu-ray Disc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

January 9, 2007 - TDK is brining the Blu-ray Disc love to CES 2007. The company announced its ginorma-tron-gantic new Blu-ray Disc, which weighs in at a very hefty 200 gigabytes. Currently, top-of-the-line Blu-ray Discs are able to store some 50 gigabytes and even that is considered enormous when compared to HD-DVDs, which can generally hold about half that amount. TDK call its new super Blu-ray Disc the "most advanced optical media ever developed." And when we consider just how many secretly snapped photos of our naked co-workers we could store on these discs, we can't help but agree.

"TDK's 200GB blue laser disc technology represents an important milestone for optical media. As a founding member of the Blu-ray Disc Association, we are proud of our work to shape the future of digital recording," commented Sethu Palat, TDK Director of Marketing. He continued, "With TDK's technological advancements, Blu-ray is proving to be the ultimate, future-ready format. As the technology continues to evolve, Blu-ray Discs are becoming increasingly important products in TDK's line." Palat concluded, "At CES 2007, attendees can preview the 200GB blue laser disc, and learn more about the technologies behind the format that is redefining the consumer electronics industry."
The company's new Blu-ray Discs can store an amazing 18 hours of high-definition video content encoded at 24Mbps -- the same bitrate employed by today's AVCHD-encoded HD camcorders.
TDK also revealed its new 8cm Mini Blu-ray Discs, which naturally do not store 200GBs of information, but are, of course, physically smaller -- always a benefit for portable devices. These discs store 16GBs of data and will be utilized by a new breed of Blu-ray compatible HD camcorders.

I'm not sure how relevant it is to Blu-ray movie players as 50Gb DL is the limit of the BD movie spec.

I love how marketing deal with facts "Currently, top-of-the-line Blu-ray Discs are able to store some 50 gigabytes and even that is considered enormous when compared to HD-DVDs, which can generally hold about half that amount."

Isn't "generally" half of 50 considered to be 25 ?

I'm not trying to say it isn't and I've no idea if existing HD DVD players will read 51Gb HD DVD's. As you say it's showing what is possible in the future and looks good on paper. Personally I would like to see more effort going into the current generation players to fix BD-J/live issues and better cost as this is the primary reason I'm holding off going dual format.

Re: 200gb Blu Ray Discs!

Look on the bright side! With this monster capacity, BD could provide a movie, and 7 different PinP options. Probably cheaper than fixing the problem.

It's more than likely it will happen, since it would be pointless to make a disc that won't be readable by current gen players.

TDK hasn't been clear on the whole "How to" part, but I expect to see more information soon.

It would certainly be good for MPEG2 decoding though, lol

Re: 200gb Blu Ray Discs!

LOL this makes me laugh ... they probably couldnt even fill up a 50gb disc with one movie & all of its contents ... let alone a 200gb

got to agree. Get the current stuff working right and then look at larger capacity.

Re: 200gb Blu Ray Discs!

I believe this is just another layer on the disk, wouldn't it simply require the laser to refocus?
The would be a use for this capacity - TV series, film trilogies etc

I think you might find it's over 8 layers. Suprised to see the existing BD maunfacturers not jumping all over this is it can be used to capacity in the existing players.

Re: 200gb Blu Ray Discs!

I can't see real world movie applications just yet using this amount of storage ... not until super hd or whatever they are calling it in japan (7000x4000 or something). But just look at the potential of the technology now. It was suggested in the early press releases that the potential storage capacity could be huge. They've proved it. Not quite the same in the HDDVD camp... 51gb? Not quite.
