Ps3 Bluray Playback Confusion?!!?
 Hello to all.
I am using a ps3 on a samsung lcd tv & downloaded a bluray trailer for talladega nights, the picture on the trailer was truly stunning so I decided to treat myself to a bluray film (Total Recall) The picture isnt great at all to be honest, pretty grainy, nothing like the quality of the trailer that I downloaded, is this due to the film being fairly old? The disc says 1080p beyond high definition but my lcd only plays at 720p/1080i.
Hope someone can help, not sure whether I should be changing any settings or not.

Re: Ps3 Bluray Playback Confusion?!!?
Er, what has WMV-HD got to do with Blu-ray? Nothing wrong with the DVD version, and any film can be transferred to digital formats without messing it up. 99% of current displays are not 1080p capable, even some 1080p panels, LOL! Also, ones like your Samsung do not correctly handle 1080i deinterlacing, that could screw things up, as well as a poor tranfer in MPEG2 codec, squeezed onto a 25gb disc. It has nothing to do with the original source material, it's the BD trnasfer, encoding, deinterlacing, all conspiring to foul up your enjoyment. Your PS3 might give better results with the Samsung on 720p, it's worth a shot. No deinterlacing, just scaling. The PS3 should have no trouble converting to 720p, at least that experiment would eliminate 1 thing from the reckoning.

Re: Ps3 Bluray Playback Confusion?!!?
the PS3 cannot, for some reason, output Blu-Ray movies at 720p. No one knows the reason why or if its going to be fixed or not. To improve your situation, set you max res to 1080i and the movie will output at 1080i. If the max res is set at 720p, the movie will output at 480p
As I said, its just for Blu-Ray disc movies, nothing else.

Does this mean that it (the 720p issue) cannot be fixed in a firmware update?

Its probably the Master. Try a different film with 4.5 stars. Reviews from here.

Re: Ps3 Bluray Playback Confusion?!!?
Negative on the master, there is nothing wrong with T2. Dodgy Mpeg2 transfer maybe, but I still don't really think so. The 'worst' transfer I've seen on BD was noticeably better than SD. I think the biggest area is the 1080i deinterlacing in the display. I guess that's why Sony want everyone to have 1080p Tvs, cos theirs don't deinterlace properly either.

That's right, the HD DVD version of Total Recall is very good. Considered 'Tier 1' by AVSForums in fact.

What it has to do with it is that the original source is OK. WMV-HD has little to do with anything due to the extreme compression. It's 4.7Gb, not 25. Best that could be achieved at the time, but not the same as new HD of any flavour. You just can't win with a dedicated BD man, I'm not knocking the transfer, I really don't think it's where the fault is. The guy has some slightly problematic hardware, nothing that can be done about it.
