Standalone Prices

Thought it might be interesting to look at player prices now CES is underway. This is the proposed lineup of players with annoucned MSRPs priced cheapest first. Obviously all prices will vary at retail - but that goes equally for all models. Some prices are unconfirmed but should be in the right ballpark:

HD DVD: Alco (Budget Player: US$250 ?)
HD DVD: Shinco (Budget Player: US$250 ?)
HD DVD: Jiangkui (Budget Player: US$250 ?)
HD DVD: Liteon (Budget Player: US$250 ?)
HD DVD: Toshiba A2 (US$499 - possibly to be reduced to US$399)
HD DVD: Toshiba A20 (US$599)
HD DVD: Toshiba XA2 (US$800)

BLURAY: Samsung BDP1200 (US$800)
HD DVD: Onkyo (US$800 - possible more)
BLURAY: Philips BDP (US$899)
BLURAY: Sony BDP10 (US$999 - two new models coming but no prices and only prototypes shown)

DUAL--: LG BH100 (US$1200)
BLURAY: Panasonic BDP10 (US$1300)
BLURAY: Pioneer Elite (US$1500)

HD DVD: Meridian (US$lots)

...obviously I haven't put the consoles on the list - the PS3 and Xbox 360 are priced roughly the same (if you take console and addon drive together) - but it seems that HD DVD has the budget/middle market nicely sewn up - BluRay need to get players in their ASAP.

If Panasonic, Pioneer (etc) annouce new models are MSRPs I'll update the list.

I refuse to fuel a trend that may end up with a large proportion of future 'dual' discs being encased in purple plastic! Green looks a lot nicer

Re: Standalone Prices

You forgot the PS3. 20GB and 60GB should be listed seperately.

No I didn't - it's "standalone prices" - but I mentioned both the PS3 and Xbox addon drive in the text below the list.

Re: Standalone Prices

The PS3 is a stand alone player, it will play blu-ray discs on its own, its the XBox plus Add-on which isn't.

Rasczak shows his bias again.

Re: Standalone Prices

HD DVD prices sound very promising. When the chinese get going it won't be long before supermarket players come about.

But Blu-ray, come on Sony people! open your eyes and ears!

Why do you have to turn a interesting post about price comparisons into a stupid pissing match yet again. Seriously grow up.

PS3 has a cheap version and a more expensive version, so does the Xbox 360. With the addon both are practically the same price as each other.

For anyone that cares:

Xbox Core $299, HD DVD addon $199 Total = $498

Xbox full $399, HD DVD Addon $199 Total = $598

PS3 60gb $599

PS3 20gb - $499

So just just as the OP says there both the same price. If he cares to add them to his list he can, if he chooses not to put consoles in with standalone players i full understand due to the title of his post.

Nothing I've seen yet - the new Samsung lits DTS-HD but not Master Audio. There is a big BD announcement today though so we should have something announced soon.

But in fact the lowest ACTUAL retail HD DVD standalone is $499? The rest are just guesses? The first four haven't been announced have they?
