Toms TV wall project all suggestions welcome.

Hi all,

I have loved this forum and have been amazed at what can be acheived.Now i would like to do something along the same lines in my living room.

As you can see in the picture all i have done is to mount the LCD 32" on the wall,this is pretty much how it was in my last house.we have been in our new house for nearly half a year and both me and the better half agree the room could handle either 42" or even 50" screen so this will be the next purchase.

What we then want to do is to make the area more 'sleek' for want of a better word and make the area more tidy in general maybe adding shelves to hold the equipment so we can get rid of the glass stand.

the wall in question has a recess of about 45cm so would like to square this off somehow making the TV etc in the wall.

what and how to do this is the question and welcome any suggestions on all aspects from extra lighting to making the stud wall,to how or where the shelves for the equipment should/could be.

Where you have the mirror above the fireplace looks an ideal spot to me for sinking the new tv into the wall.

where the fireplace is was an option when we first moved in and several houses on the road have put theres on that wall but with no fire.

one of the main things the missus wanted was for the fire to be the main feature of the room and not the TV.

also it would mean the viewing distance would be only be 8 foot and the TV would be quite high.

plus that bloody mirror cost a small fortune!!

still that might be an option if building a stud or something on the current wall becomes to much work.

Had some flashes going of in my head when i seen your ready made space, and the more i thought of them i thought they would look great in my house , except i don't have a space like that and anyway my cinema is going to be portable. But that's another story so here goes.
Build a frame work of either 20mm-30mm box section steel or 50mm wood.
This would be split when looking at it middle half and a quarter either side, hope your with me. Now either side quarter would just be stretched material over the frame that your speakers would sit behind and the middle have sheet wood. The middle section would have the screen mounted flush with picture frame around it and sections cut out for shelves for the gear.

Also if you leave the rear of the shelves open but again covered with material you could have led lights mounted on the back wall which would glow through the material, or just mount lights in the shelves.

But the main thing about the frame is that although it looked like a middle section and a section either side it would in fact be able to spit 1/4 - 3/4 and either side would be hinged to allow you to swing the frame open like big doors so when ever anything fails or you want to change anything or alter something you just pull on the hidden handle and the frame opens up to allow you to do things without having dismantle or disconnect things. Or have the side panels only material where your speakers are and the rest shelves, but again have the shelves actually mounted on the back wall so the frame is not carrying there weight if you want the frame to open.

I can't offer much help, but whatever you do, do not put the TV above the fire. A mate has done this and you go round to play games or watch films and go home with neck ache! The TV should be on a level with you eyes when you are sitting down. Also that recess is perfect for doing a plaster baord wall and haveing your TV and equiment mounted into that.

I think i understand what your suggesting and think its similer to the sort of thing i wanted.THe idea about being able to access the equipment at the back is a must for me.

the idea about putting speackers etc behind material may be something i could use.

hpoom i think your right above the fire would be to high,i actually think where my tv is mounted now is to high and will have to be lowered when redone depending on the size of TV i choose.

the space in the recess i feel is perfect to do something with,just need to get it right.

I think tv height should really be the center of the tv at eye level when you are in the viewing position, that way your eyes or head are not having to be moved up or down from their natural gaze level.

That is how I have mine at the mo, it is the most comfortable height.
