Battlestar Galactica & Star Trek: TOS - Coming To HD DVD

As part of the ongoing CES 07 announcements - Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: TOS are coming to HD DVD. No dates announced yet but it will be this year

Not to worried about TOS myself (I am an avid TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT fan but don't like the original series) but Battlestar Galactica is, for me, an absolute must have.

No word yet on BluRay versions - possible for Paramount's Star Trek (although will probably be encoded in MPEG2 as opposed to the superior VC1) but unlikely for Battlestar Galactica as Unversal are exclusively HD DVD.

Re: Battlestar Galactica & Star Trek: TOS - Coming To HD DVD

Im looking forward to many shows coming to HD discs. The only thing that I dont like is that I already have a lot of stuff on DVD! (although I have been holding off more recently)

I guess the HD version would be the ultimate though so it should be worth getting them. Even if you already have them.

They just better not come out with another format and force us to re-buy it all again

Will Star Trek TOS be the originals or the new versions with the new SFX?

Cheers

The remastering is mainly being done to support the HD release which is believed to be HD-DVD/DVD combos for some bizzare reason although CBS/Paramount do support Blur-ray as well.

The CGI sequences will be Widescreen and the live action sequences will be 4:3, just like they are on XBox Live Marketplace.

Re: Battlestar Galactica & Star Trek: TOS - Coming To HD DVD

Much as I love ST TOS, I think I'll pass on the HD versions. Already been stupid enoough to buy both previous DVD incarnations, the hideously expensive 2 eps per disc first release and the season box sets. I have to say the picture qulity on them was pretty damn good anyway, so I'm gonna stick with those.

If you thought that quality of the DVD releases was good then you have to try the HD-DVDs, I have been downloading HD episodes of TOS off XBox Live Marketplace and they are incredible, hard to believe they are 40 years old.

Fingers in ears, hands over eyes, I'm blanking your last post from my mind Indiana Jones

I've convinced myslef that the standard DVD versions are good enough, much as I did with the standard speical edition Bond DVDs, still ended up buying the Ultimate Editions

Re: Battlestar Galactica & Star Trek: TOS - Coming To HD DVD

I did read a while back that everything Star Trek related would be re-mastered in HD. That means ST:TNG, DS9, Voyager. I think Enterprise was already HD?

Apparently everything from ST:TNG onwards was recorded and filmed on 35mm, but then subsequently transfered to video (SD NTSC) during post-production. So now they are going back to the original 35mm prints and re-doing the ENTIRE post-production sequence onto HD including the picture, FX and sound mix.

This will be fantastic.

Re: Battlestar Galactica & Star Trek: TOS - Coming To HD DVD

Fantastic isnt the reaction you get from most fans, while I love how they re-mastered TOS I think alot of people out there just dont think its right, a 60's TV show should look cheap and tacky and the new CGI sequences are totally out of place.

Personally if they can do as good a job on TNG/DS9/VOY as they did not TOS then I agree, it would be fantastic.

Personally my reaction is fantastic. Where a TV show was made before HD was even considered I will always view the DVD SD release as the "Proper" release and the HD release as an alternative.

Doctor Who DVDs have been released with some of the effects redone with CGI, but they have got it right. They always put them as an option and the original is available as the default on the DVD.

Personally I hope that Star Trek is given an HD release in both 4:3 and 16 so that purists like me can watch it in 4:3 and others can watch it cropped.

I am fine with this because I consider them as alternative versions.
