Re: Toshiba announces 50 GB disc

nothing to do with HD-DVD players, this is not part of the HD-DVD spec and therefore won't be used for movies on the HD-DVD players

i.e. wrong forum

Re: Toshiba announces 50 GB disc

I think that this is designed to be used for HD DVD films if it is approved by the DVD forum for use, unlike the 200Gb BD discs which are for 'computer use'. So I think it entirely appropriate to discuss here.

Re: Toshiba announces 50 GB disc

Good news (if applicable to movies). Any news on triple layer discs?

I think this is a 3 x 17Gb disc.

Re: Toshiba announces 50 GB disc

Indeed you are right - didn't read it properly!

I do wonder these discs will be able to be played on current machines as wouldn't the laser need to realign to read the data on the third layer - surely a firmware fix won't suffice?

Re: Toshiba announces 50 GB disc

we just don't know yet.

More interesting however is not the 51Gb figure but the 1.5x speed they will run these discs at wich addresses the one significant weakness of the HD DVD format currently, but people seem to have missed this

well some of the other side believe that only the movie on the disc and no extras like pip are relevant, so saying that disc read speed for film content is important would make them look a bit of a £$%^ dont you think?

looks like they lost/are losing the storage arguement too now so sony better get its act together!

Re: Toshiba announces 50 GB disc

I'm a bit confused here, who do mean by the other side?

If BD, they have already said they are more interested in the extras etc than AQ / PQ which they say they have cracked which means that both camps are aiming at the same target.

If HD DVD, then they are already delivering both PinP type stuff and AQ / PQ.

Re: Toshiba announces 50 GB disc

WOW I have been away a while and this is great news.

AVZombie said the disc's were backwards compatable and use the same technology so I hope the new 51GB disc's work fully with my HD-XE1 I ordered :D

Anyway great news maybe this means more extras in HD on a disc.

im reffering to the blu-ray camp who argue that things like pip are not worth it and the main feature is the thing to concentrate on most. (see the numerous threads on blu-ray cant do pip)

im am talking about consumers on these boards not the manufacturers if thats what you think i ment
