Samsung announce 2nd gen player (BD-P1200)
Not quite the $499 price as some rumours had suggested, unless they've a surprise waiting in the wings. The specification of HDMI 1.3 and HQV processing seems not all that dissimilar to Toshiba's HD-XA2/XE1 HD DVD player ($999), though at the moment things are vague as to whether the new Samsung supports any advanced audio codecs, 24p output and the full requirements for interactive content.

Featuring HDMI 1.3 (with CEC to control other devices, just like some of LG's new HDTVs), and DTS audio support the player will launch in March with a price of only $799, compared to the $999 launch price of the previous version. Samsung also confirmed the unit will feature an HQV processor for clear images, but no word on if it is the same process used in Toshiba's HD-XA2, or if 1080p24 will be an available option at launch.

Re: Samsung announce 2nd gen player (BD-P1200)
LPCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS do indeed appear to be the only supported audio codecs in the new Samsung. It will also play CDs. No mention of advanced BD-J or BD-Live support is made in the press release, or 24p output, which I have linked to below:

Re: Samsung announce 2nd gen player (BD-P1200)
I'm surprised Samsung have set the MSRP so high - can't help but feel the price of this unit will quickly be slashed in light of the high specced US$599 Toshiba A20. Is this the start of the price war?
Get the impression Samsung may be 'treading water' with this model in preparation for a dual format model this time next year...

Does BD do True HD and DTS HD? Or is it just this player that does not?

The format supports a different version of Dolby TrueHD from that found on HD DVD - however only 1 disc currently uses this codec. DTS-HD (inc Master Audio) is supported as well and is used on some discs (Fox releases for example).

Re: Samsung announce 2nd gen player (BD-P1200)
Hmmm.
The A-2 (the US equivalent of the E-1) has an msrp of $699, so this is $100 more.
I would imagune that'll translate to about £75 more once it's suffered the usual mid-Atlantic price hike.
So, it may well be in the shops/online in the UK for £75 more than an E-1, which'll peg it at £450-£525.
Not as good as I'd like, but not too bad.
Now, if 2 or 3 more companies start releasing some similarly priced competition we might see a BD player at a price a few more of us might actually pay.

Re: Samsung announce 2nd gen player (BD-P1200)
So are the new Samsung and two Sony prototypes the only new BD players to be announced at CES?
I am very disappointed TBH. It will no doubt be well after March when/if we see the UK Sonys (which would be the ones to go for IMO). As for the Samsung again it will be a number of months before the BDP-1000 stock is shifted to make way for the 1200.
Can someone confirm whether or not the Pioneer player will be released here (non-Elite branding)?
Is a price drop on the Panasonic expected?
Sorry if I sound confused by all this but TBH I am. I was expecting a raft of 2nd gen and new manufacturer players to be announced.

Indeed - there is a big news conference for BluRay in a few hours (well about 6 I think) - so tomorrow we will wake up to some hefty BD announcements I should imagine.

Re: Samsung announce 2nd gen player (BD-P1200)
It's not being released until Summer and will be priced at US$799. Some 'stunning' features have been announced for it:
- a "Hollywood Quality Video processor"
- "Anynet+ technology" (a single remote control can operate the player, TV, and other Samsung devices).
- "Easy Top Menu" (ability to customise the interface)
On the more substantive side the as of yet unused Dolby Digital Plus codec is supported and DTS (no mention of whether DTS-HD MA). The player will have network connection but no mention of BD Live support.
Some details here
